Dr. Joy Stephenson Kolker

We are born to love and be loved. When we feel loved, we feel safe, accepted, and at home in the world. Difficult work, home, or health challenges, rocky relationships, or unresolved childhood issues can make us feel unloved, resulting in depression, anxiety, mistrust, grief, anger, loneliness, substance use, or low self-esteem. I provide a safe haven to explore your innermost feelings, thoughts, experiences, and desires. I want to hear your story. I listen attentively, bring awareness to your feelings, and gently identify and challenge subtle self-defeating beliefs and behavior patterns, which can cause suffering.

In working with couples, I am practical, validate both partners, build bridges, and guide effective communication. Together, we will identify the words and behaviors that cause distress in your relationship. I help you appreciate your strengths, identify resources, clarify challenges, and explore opportunities, in a warm, engaging manner.

We find and practice ways to relieve stress and anxiety, reduce depression, improve communication, and increase well-being. I use talk therapy, discuss dreams, and at times incorporate sandtray, myths, and movies. My office is located in an elegant Queen Anne Victorian in Santa Rosa's historic Cherry Street district.
