It's an unfortunate reality, but many people never reach their full potential in life; there always seems to be one or more things holding them back. This can be due to past traumatic experiences, a difficult childhood, their own thoughts, etc... the list is endless! As a result, anxiety and depression can set in.

Have you been to therapy in the past? Perhaps you worked with a traditional talk therapist, gained considerable awareness, yet at the root things have not changed. Maybe therapy has been helpful in some ways, but you have not felt truly seen or met. Does your current struggle feel bigger than you at times? Perhaps it feels connected to trauma of previous generations but you can't explain why. Trauma is an energy that remains stuck in the body and gets passed down genetically- until acknowledged and felt. To heal from trauma/PTSD/C-PTSD, we need to understand how the body holds trauma as well as the wisdom and route towards healing.

You, like all people, create narratives about yourself, others, and the world, and your psychology is made up of the stories you tell yourself. These stories provide you with maps for how to navigate relationships, both with others and with the many parts of yourself. Whether you have found yourself here on your own, or at the urging of a partner, friend, or family member, it is likely that at least one of the maps you’ve created isn't working anymore. Moving through the world with an outdated, limiting, or incomplete map might manifest as feeling anxious or depressed, interpersonal conflicts, unhelpful anger, etc.

I approach psychotherapy from a place of empathy and non-judgment. I tailor my treatment approach to each unique individual I work with, drawing from cognitive-behavioral, relational, dialectical-behavioral and motivational interviewing; assisting clients with both the here-and-now symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression) and the underlying issues associated with those symptoms (e.g. relationship problems, identity issues, past experiences of trauma).

Life gets hard at times with increasing demands and a finite amount of resources. As creatures of habit, we tend to get stuck in what seems like a never-ending cycle. My clients come to me with a desire for REAL change. They may be managing long-standing mental health problems and/or new and chronic medical conditions. They also seek to improve their relationships and find out what makes their life worth living. In the end, my clients appreciate introspection and understanding the past, but believe that actual concrete change is needed.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
