Fred Ahlers

I have been a therapist for forty years. I first worked in New Orleans at River Oaks Hospital with in-patient adolescents and adults, having success with treating depression, anxiety, borderline personality and abuse victims. After graduating from Tulane University in Social Work, I began private practice while also working with in-patient children and adolescents at De Paul Hospital. The private practice was with adults, couples, families, adolescents and children,having success with depression, abuse victims and anxiety. After moving to Birmingham in 2006, I have had an out-patient practice treating adults, adolescents, children, and couples.

I specialize in helping clients build insight into where problems come from and how to change. We work on understanding reasons for their current issues by looking at their whole lives. This puts them in better control of their lives and enables them to make better decisions about how to change.

I do an extensive social history with all my clients. We then go over it together to formulate a treatment plan and to explain why they are in distress. This tells us what to focus on as the work goes forward. The power that comes from this helps relieve the distress.
