Starting therapy is a tremendous gesture of hope and self-love. It can also be scary or daunting to know where to begin. Whatever is bringing you to therapy right now- a break up, a loss, the overwhelm of being highly sensitive, the gut wrenching challenges of fertility struggles, the anticipation and transitions of pregnancy- will be explored with openness, curiosity and acceptance. We all struggle in life and are not meant to do it alone. Things really do get easier when we share what is hard with others.

Welcome. Are you ready for the work necessary to make real, enduring change? Do you have a troubling personal issue or suffer from general dissatisfaction? My orientation is to focus on the unconscious, the elusive essence of the problem. A powerful process unfolds when change occurs at this level of the mind. This opens the space for authentic personal transformation.

My approach to therapy uses humor, openness and honesty to dive beneath the surface of emotions, and address the root of the discomfort. Whatever it is that drives you into therapy - dissatisfaction with your job, relationship or just life in general - is explored in an environment of curiosity and compassion. We often cause our own suffering by being our own worst critic & through the made up stories we tell ourselves. Through our work together, we can uncover and address areas in which growth is wanting to occur, so you can become your best self.

Things may be hard right now, but this is only one chapter in the story of your life. My job as a therapist is to walk alongside you as you write the next one. As a psychologist at Stella Nova Psychology, I support women and nonbinary professionals to feel better, and show up in their lives as the people they want to be. My clients learn to build confidence, address negative patterns that are holding them back, and improve their relationships with themselves and others. I see my role as equal parts collaborator, support, and guide for the journey.

As a licensed therapist based in San Francisco, I help individuals, couples, and families dive beneath the surface-level issues to discover the underlying causes of their distress. Many men, women, and non-binary individuals who choose to work with me are at the grips of anxiety, depression, addiction, grief, or relationship challenges. Many are highly motivated professionals who are self-reliant and achievement-focused but often struggle with self-defeating thoughts and patterns that keep them stuck.

Throughout our lives, we all have experienced feelings of depression, anxiety, and anger. These emotions leave you feeling insecure, shameful, lonely, unworthy and stuck in unhealthy patterns of behavior. Trauma can have negative emotional and physical effects and can lead to family/relationship issues. I specialize in solution-focused brief therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness and CBT. These approaches allow me to work with the client to decrease symptoms of anxiety and depression and other health/behavioral issues.

We find unique healing in your own path for change, expansion, and self assurance. My best source is your own psychology. We find the tools within you for our work. We will seek clarification for yourself and understanding of others. Good psychotherapy provides not only a safe haven to relieve anxiety, depression, or any psychological pain, but also provides tools for your continuing growth. We add the richness of Jung to insights from psychoanalytically based psychotherapy. Also note that I have an additional practice in support of conscious dying.

Many of my clients come to me after having spent a number of years in traditional talk therapy, feeling there is something deeper, within their body, that needs attention and healing. They recognize that trauma is stored in their body and can only be healed with the body in mind. Symptoms might include unrelenting anxiety, chronic pain or tension patterns, numbness, dissociation, and/or emotional, behavioral, or physiological patterns that continue to show up in spite of the cognitive insights and shifts that have occurred with the help of past therapy.

Are you tired of feeling stuck? Stuck in your patterns. Stuck with habits you don’t remember signing up for. Stuck in worry spirals that can keep you awake at night. Do you feel paralyzed by perfectionism and have difficulty making even the simplest decisions? Maybe you have difficulty setting boundaries and constantly second-guess your decisions? Have you felt stuck for so long, you’ve just accepted it as The Way Life Is. I can help you change these patterns and get unstuck. Finally.

Our struggles can often help us learn more about ourselves, our values, and what matters to us. I work collaboratively with clients to understand how to embrace and express these values in their everyday lives. I incorporate Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction into my work which is an effective tool in raising awareness of our behavioral choices, coping with stress, and increasing focus. I find the therapeutic process to be an exciting and challenging endeavor that enhances our lives and pushes us towards continuous growth. Cultivating mindful awareness helps us take more deliberate steps of action to improve our lives.

I want to assist you in examining why you feel like your life is not where you think or sense it should be. Why you have a nagging feeling that perhaps you're wasting time and not living your life in a more deep and fulfilling manner. You may think you're “not good enough,” or “if only this would have/not have happened," life would be different. The activities you do feel banal, going to work/school is dreadful, relationships and family are difficult, and the values and beliefs that once held you have lost their ground. You feel lonely, depressed, anxious, and perhaps substance use is worsening. You’re wondering about doing therapy.

We are wired for connection — with our internal selves, with others, and within broader communities. But oftentimes there are barriers. It can be something we learned when we were small and trying to survive, a message from dominant culture that plagues our sense of self, oppressive systems that can be exhausting to fight, and/or an emotional wound that needs time to heal. Whatever brings you to therapy, your awareness of seeking someone to walk with you on this healing path is a great first step!

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in San Francisco?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
