“All individuals are entitled to understand themselves, and behave authentically in their daily lives. In order to accomplish this many people need to resolve the inhibitions that betray their strengths. Because each person is unique, there can be no set formula for helping people find solutions and pursue their goals. As a therapist I focus on the particular circumstances presented, and help construct personalized goals by carefully and non-judgmentally attending to what is being presented and responding in a direct, supportive, and interactive manner, always from an empathic perspective.

I understand my strength as listening and understanding from an empathic perspective. One which helps people gain confidence and self esteem. I believe growth occurs in a trusting relationship.

I have trained interns for more then 10 years, and have taught therapists at the graduate level here in Santa Barbara. Besides having a doctorate in clinical psychology, I have trained in contemporary psychoanalysis and am receiving a second Doctorate in psychoanalysis. (see personal website: (ROBERTSHAFERPHD.COM)”
