“People enter counseling for a variety of types of problems. Often they are experiencing depression, anxiety, or some other troublesome mood or emotion. Frequently these feelings are related to some interpersonal relationship or life situation. Sometimes one is concerned that there is something about themselves that they need to change. People decide to enter counseling when they see these kinds of problems interfering with their life or they need some help in working them out.
Much the same as when you see a physician for the first time, we will want to get a detailed description of the problems you identify. In addition, other aspects of your current life situation and past history may relate to the problems presented.
I attempt to be an active partner in exploring the problems and your solution options. Most patients are seen once a week for a 45 to 50 minute session. The length of treatment is determined by the nature and severity of the problems. Brief interventions may be four to six sessions.”
