Dr. Thomas S. Li

In my clinical work, I conduct focused, short-term psychotherapy based on experiential, cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and family systems approaches that are customized for each individual client's needs. Client-therapist collaboration is emphasized and a supportive therapeutic environment is provided. I favour the use of procedures which help clients to understand, control and integrate their own thoughts, feelings and behaviours. In my forensic work, I adopt an integrated approach in which both clinical and actuarial methods are used for achieving accurate and thorough evaluation. Every attempt is made to integrate scientific findings with professional judgement in addressing psycho-legal issues.

I have over 25 years of clinical experience in a wide variety of settings, including law courts, correctonal facilities, hospitals, and social service centres. Besides, I was a professor at prominent universities for many years. I provide culturally sensitive psychological services to clients with emotional/relational conerns and forensic/legal issues.

I am conversant in English and Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin). I am also experienced in serving Chinese, Asians, and ethnic minorities. In my clinical practice, I regularly conduct forensic and medico-legal assessments, provide court-mandated counselling services, and act as an expert witness in mental health, family, civil, and criminal courts.
