Dr. Stephen Ira Abramowitz

Psychologist , PhD

I believe the quality of the relationship between the therapist and patient is the basis for successful and lasting therapy. I would first encourage getting to know each other and then having you familiarize me with the problems that brought you to therapy. I would then guide you toward considering new ways of dealing with your problems that are effective and satisfying. This process might entail reframing negative or distorted thoughts that only exacerbate your situation. Such reconsideraion of self-defeating ideas can help to heal hurtful emotions. In the end, every person is unique and the therapeutic journey should reflect that individuality.
After almost 20 years of experience, I have developed several specialty areas. First and foremost is a focus on depression and mood disorders. I also have seen many people suffering from the various forms of anxiety. Peer relationships, couples and mid-life transitions are other concentrations.
I was on the faculty of the University of California, Davis, where I taught, supervised psychiatric residents and psychology graduate students and treated patients. I also published extensively on the process and outcome of psychotherapy, with an emphasis on the results achieved by the many different approaches.
