My focus in therapy is to build a trusting relationship which inspires self-discovery and a greater capacity for change. I tend to use a relational style with curiosity, humor, and compassion to hear your story and process with you in a non-judgmental and affirming space. I work with adolescents, adults, and couples. Whether what you're looking for is a diagnosis that helps you understand mental health symptoms and learn ways to cope, better communication skills in your relationships, a safe space to process identity formation or life transitions, or a number of other things, I believe that therapy can be a useful tool.

Immediate openings for new clients. Life's challenges can feel overwhelming at times. But developing a deeper understanding of ourselves can enable us to heal and grow in ways that we never thought possible. I believe that we can learn a lot about ourselves when we have the opportunity to explore and attune to our own emotions within the context of a supportive and meaningful relationship with a therapist. My aim is to earn the trust of my client and help them open up and explore their deepest thoughts and feelings in a way that provokes self-knowledge, enables healing, and inspires growth.

We all feel tangled up sometimes, out of connection with our inner sense of ourselves. Maybe there’s been trouble in your family or intimate relationships recently. Maybe you’re grappling with overwhelming concerns of identity, neurotype, relationship style, or sexuality. Or maybe a big change or resurging past event has put you off balance. Therapy offers a connecting space where we will tenderly and patiently be with those complicated feelings, helping you cultivate deeper awareness of your past and present, gather up tools to navigate the turbulent times, and practice new ways of being with yourself and your loved ones.

Psychotherapy is something that happens between people...you and me. It is a process that I expertly and sensitively guide, but it is something that we experience together. Relationships, past and present, may be a source of pain, frustration, or fear...but they are also the key to unlocking your full potential. Together, we will work to alleviate your most pressing problems as well as to develop a fuller understanding of the deeper, underlying issues that keep you stuck in emotional and relational patterns that limit your capacity to more fully give and receive love.

When you and your partner started dating things were great! You had so much in common, your communication was great, and your sex life was fireworks. But now those days feel like ancient history and that spark has been replaced with the same old arguments, resentment, and feeling more like roommates than partners. If you’re convinced it doesn’t have to be this way, you’re right. I help couples just like you identify negative conflict patterns, navigate betrayal and infidelity, and have better sex.

I believe you are the authority on your own life. Within you exists the potential to express your authentic self and to live a fulfilling life. However, there are times in our lives when we may experience stress, depression, anxiety, anger, or complacency. When this happens it can be difficult to manage our lives effectively and with peace of mind. This is when professional support can be helpful. Whatever concerns you are struggling with, I will collaborate with you to help you identify your goals and develop a treatment approach to empower you to realize them.

Therapy can be uncomfortable and awkward and strange. Getting to know someone new is scary, and it can feel like there’s so much pressure. My goal as a therapist is to help you feel as safe as possible while you discover the strength and skill you already have to heal, thrive, and reach your goals.

Bringing Together Art and Science reflects my clinical practice with adults, adolescents and couples. It is grounded in attachment theory, developmental/complex trauma, cognitive behavioral theory, psychodynamic theory and cultural competency. My practice also integrates emerging neuroscience research about the brain and how childhood and family experiences, including trauma, affects the brain and becomes the blueprint for subsequent relationships throughout our lives. My practice also has a human and artistic element - everyone is unique and our work together reflects this.

At Good Human Work, we believe that making the choice to engage in therapy is not a sign of weakness. We’d argue that choosing to directly deal with stressors is actually a sign of incredible strength. We also believe that therapy is for everyone. Life is crazy, and we’re not pre-programmed with all the answers. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed and unclear on how to make things better.

My "ideal" client is between 14 and 99 years old, motivated, able to engage in honest dialogue, and willing to step back and re-evaluate themselves and their lives with fresh eyes, through psychotherapy. They understand that my role is not to “solve” their problems; rather, it is to provide a fresh perspective and to assist them as they seek their own, unique answers that honor their hard-won life experience and inner wisdom. My approach is to encourage authenticity, sharing laughter, tears, frustrations, and gratitude frequently and openly. In over 30 years of clinical experience, there are few issues that I haven't encountered.

Hi there! My name is Steph, thanks for taking the time to view my profile! You’re likely here because you’re considering starting, or continuing, therapy—kudos to you! I know from being a client myself that making this choice isn’t always an easy one. Here’s a little bit about my experience, background, and approach to therapy to help you figure out if working together would be something you’re interested in. I currently work primarily (but not exclusively) with adolescents and young adults.

Therapy can offer guidance and support in times when we find ourselves faced with painful and challenging life circumstances. We may feel stuck in repetitive patterns that we can’t seem to break — feeling lost, overwhelmed, and unsure of what to do. As a psychodynamic therapist, I invite you to explore the places that you tend to avoid or keep hidden. Through this process you will deepen your self-awareness and gain greater insight into any struggles, patterns, and problems you are facing in life, thus opening new possibilities and ways of engaging in life more fully as yourself.

They may feel frustrated that they are not finding satisfying relationships or the gratifying career that they had always thought they would.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Minneapolis?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
