I am skilled at helping people navigate a variety of challenges. Anxiety is my specialty. Whether it’s a constant background feeling, social anxiety, or a sense of being an “imposter,” who will inevitably be discovered, I can help you. I also work with people struggling with life transitions and those who struggle with depression. No matter what challenges you are facing, the big picture is always composed of many little components. We’ll tackle those one by one, until the big picture looks very different from where it started.

Have you been wanting to make meaningful changes in your life but feel hesitant to start therapy? I know how courageous making this move is, and provide a relaxed, supportive atmosphere as you explore your emotional life. I partner with you to identify your goals for personal growth. Together we create a safe space for you to clarify patterns of behavior and thinking that may be bogging you down. We can look at repeated sources of disappointment or dissatisfaction so that you can grow away from them and into a more vibrant relation to yourself, others, and the world.

My work as a psychologist centers on problems with anxiety and stress, particularly within the context of our multicultural society. I help people with conflicts in: interracial identity; adolescent-young adult identity and ethnic identity; intergenerational relationships; interracial relationships; and adoption. Such conflicts often coexist with struggles in mood regulation, depression, and anxiety, for which there are effective psychological treatments and healthy solutions.

Life’s journey features many complex and dynamic processes. How we come to learn about ourselves and understand life around us is key in how we experience it. It is my belief that self-care with the purpose of healing and self discovery can radically improve our experience navigating everyday life and have powerful impacts in the world around us. Informed by principles of social justice and anti-oppression, I offer a space to work with you as an individual in context of communities that you are a part of and are important to you. My practice integrates psychodynamic, cognitive and mindfulness techniques.

In our initial two hour intensive psycho-dynamic evaluation (ISTDP), you will find me interested, interactive, emotionally present and attuned to you. By the end of this consultation you can expect that we will have a mutual understanding of the underlying emotional problem causing your symptoms. You can expect me to be clear and specific about the psychotherapy process I will recommend for you and its rationale. You will learn a great deal about me from my questions, comments and my way of being with you. At the end of our consultation, you should have no difficulty deciding whether or not I could be a good therapist for you.

Are you feeling stuck in an emotional quandary? Not sure how to take the next step? Are you stressed at work or in your relationship, or because you don't have a relationship? Do you experience parenting/child issues? I use an active interpersonal approach to identify and resolve behavior that inhibits change and growth. I work collaboratively and interactively which allows one to find their voice and formulate a plan for change. I view my role as helping one access their ability to be self-determined. Sometimes our environments feel so loud that we adapt by living in a reactive state to what's going on around us, rather than attuning to what's within us. We can intellectually know ourselves and the world we want, but not emotionally embody ourselves and our desires. This can feel like a tiring loop that often manifests in depressive, anxious, and perfectionistic tendencies. We can change this! Learn how to relate to your emotions in a new way, where they support your ability to cultivate a fully alive life stemming from within YOUR mind-body-heart-spirit!

Therapy is a safe space in which to gain clarity, empowerment and tools to maintain mindfulness. Making the decision to seek therapy is one which should be respected and commended. Congratulations on taking this first step. Quite often, my clients come to therapy with hopes of developing tools to aid them in living their authentic lives or to heal from fractured relationships, generational traumas or injustices which have deeply impacted their self-esteem and/or coping skills. Other times, my clients come to therapy to work on simply navigating life’s daily hurdles. I strive to be an objective ally on your healing journey.

You’re probably feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you’re tired of being upset and misunderstood all of the time, or of acting out on emotions because you think they control you, instead of the other way around. The cycle of feeling emotionally sensitive, overly anxious, guilty or ashamed, and always on edge, has probably taken a huge tole on your life and relationships. You might feel things more strongly than other people, and when you’re upset find yourself doing things that you later regret. If the above speaks to you, then you likely spend a lot of time feeling hurt, misunderstood, and alone. But you don’t need to keep living this way.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
