Do you feel like emotions control you instead of you controlling them? Has being perceived been exhausting? Feel like life feels heavier than it's supposed to? I'm here to help. My work is focused on being neuroaffirmative, LGBTQIA+ affirmative, trauma-informed, and culturally competent for all. Life can be unpredictable, things don't go as planned, or it feels like our brain is fighting against us, but I'm glad you're here. I'm here to support you, it's okay to feel like you need to be heard, have someone to talk things through with, celebrate the little wins in life, and hold you accountable to the goals you want to succeed in.

Hi, my name is Luz, my pronouns are she/her/hers, and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). I worked as a teacher for over 15 years before making the journey into a community mental health career. I have experience in mobile crisis response, trauma, forensic mental health, and LGBTQ+ issues. To explain who I am as a therapist, I reflect back to my role as an educator. In the classroom, there was a movement for the teacher to be less of a “sage on the stage” (teacher-centered approach) and more of a “guide on the side” (student-centered). For me, therapy is a lesson plan for a learning experience.

Is it this hard for everyone? Am I just a bad mom? You are navigating parenthood or pregnancy, building a family without dysfunction, working on your relationship after bedtime, trying boundaries but still saying yes too much, and trying to figure who you are before all the hard things happened. You feel exhausted and burnt out but still give to everyone. Maybe you give so much you wonder who the heck you are or what you want? What if you could move through life from a place of true inside confidence? Tantrums and loud noises don't make your skin crawl. You are mothering yourself, while being a mother, and not repeating patterns.

As a counselor, I am passionate about creating a non-judgmental space for children and teens to identify healthy ways to manage and express their emotions. I utilize child-centered play therapy techniques, creative therapy techniques, and CBT techniques to help young people explore and utilize healthy coping skills. I believe in the power of strong family relationships whether it is the “biological” family or the “family” one has created through strong bonds. I am originally from Nebraska, am a novice hiker and enjoy exploring nature trails across North Carolina.

My practice focuses on supporting individuals who are dealing with transition, life evaluation, chronic illness, loss and change. I have had the privilege of working with individuals who are dealing with caring for both children and aging parents, caring for a spouse or loved one or grieving the loss of an individual or relationship. I have also found that families benefit from dialogue regarding changes in roles within the family system as members get older and more/less dependent. Additionally, some of my clients come to counseling to work through the age old question of "What am I doing with my life?".

I see anyone who is ready to change his or her life. My ideal clients are individuals who are unsure of their future, perceive themselves negatively, and lack the confidence in themselves and the decisions they make. They want change, but are unsure of how to implement change.

Now accepting new patients in 2024. Sometimes, life does not go how we thought it would. Our relationships/marriages become broken, our children experience pain, our family is in conflict, we develop internal conflict, and we feel lost, empty, anxious, depressed, and overwhelmed. Reading books, seeking help online, and talking to friends, ministers, or coworkers do not seem to provide lasting results. I want to help you get lasting results. Contact me by email or confidentiality request an appointment anytime, 24/7, on my website. I look forward to hearing from you.

Life is challenging at times. Maintaining healthy relationships may feel the like the greatest challenge of all! Our relationships are influenced by our childhood, family, & life experiences. Relationships take work! They can be overwhelming with the intensity of different emotions we experience, and sometimes this leads to make choices that can be unhealthy for us. Isolation, infidelity, & substance use hold us back from having a fulfilling relationship with ourselves & with others. Through exploring our challenges, accepting who we are in this moment, & leaning into the opportunity for growth we can Embrace all life has to offer!

Counseling should be a safe and judgment-free place for individuals to voice their concerns. In a world where we are constantly judged, I feel that counseling provides a unique place to allow for personal understanding and growth while reflecting on what drives our concerns, emotions, and behaviors. The counseling journey should be a joint partnership to help the client realize their own potential for growth. I use a variety of therapeutic interventions that are centered around each individual.

None of us go through life without experiencing changes or life transitions. We struggle with depression and fight off our anxiety. We go through our day on autopilot, lacking energy, and feeling hopeless. We isolate ourselves from friends and family, we feel misunderstood, or we temporarily escape reality & lessen our pain with alcohol, drugs, food, etc. Resisting change causes us pain and creates additional stress and anxiety in our lives. Acceptance and embracing change begins the healing. If we approach transitions with curiosity rather than fear, and intention rather than reluctance, we can respond to change and foster growth.

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?
The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.
Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?
Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.
Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?
The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.
How much does therapy cost?
The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.
What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?
Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.
Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?
Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.
Is online therapy a good option?
Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
