Our levels of Care
While not a normal part of aging, many senior adults develop late-life depression. As the clinical presentation of late-life depression does vary tremendously from depression at other ages, this mental health disorder can lead to major impairments - including death - in older adults. This is why family and friends must remain vigilant and aware of the symptoms of late-life depression and encourage loved ones to seek treatment immediately. Due to the stresses of older adulthood, late-life depression is often more common than once thought. These stresses may include increased medical conditions, greater levels of disability, grief over the loss of friends and loved ones, and increasing fears over both health and financial security. Unfortunately, many elderly individuals dismiss even the most intense episodes of depression as a normal part of the aging process and do not report their own symptoms or receive proper treatment. With advances in the understanding of depression and its treatment, late-life depression is highly treatable and can lead to improved quality of life and reduction of the severe effects of untreated depression.
Intake Process
It is imperative that, if you or someone you love is facing a combination of the following symptoms for a period longer than two weeks, professional help is sought out. Friends and family members can be instrumental in detecting this significant mental health disorder and can assist the older adult in seeking the treatment that he or she needs to manage late-life depression. Behavioral symptoms include: withdrawal from once-pleasurable activities, social withdrawal, pacing or fidgeting, extreme tearfulness, as well as the decreased ability to care for self. Physical symptoms include: significant change in appetite or weight, psychomotor retardation or agitation, physical pains without any discernible reason, gastrointestinal symptoms, headaches, insomnia, as well as fatigue or reduction in energy. Cognitive symptoms include: thoughts of death or wanting to commit suicide, decreased ability to think clearly, poor concentration, indecisiveness, and memory loss. Other general symptoms include sadness, anxiety, anger, feeling hopeless, feeling worthless (as though the best years are behind him or her), and suicidal ideations.
Treatment for Late-Life Depression
Upon admission to Ohio Hospital for Psychiatry, our clients are carefully assessed for mental illness, medical conditions, and other concerns in order to develop a proper plan of care for his or her stay. OHP offers The Generations Program designed specifically with older adults in mind in order to promote healing and recovery. One of our treatment methods includes medication management. Many older adults who face depression will benefit from antidepressants, which can help reduce symptoms and help older adults lead a happier life. Medication is only a part of the treatment of late-life depression. OHP also offers individual, family, and group therapy to allow older clients share and process their feelings. In addition, Ohio Hospital for Psychiatry provides experiential treatments, such as gardening and meditation, for our clients to help heal the whole person - mind, body, and spirit.
