I believe that you are the expert on your experience and take a holistic approach to therapy. I work with people who are dealing with perfectionism, infertility, anxiety, life transitions, relationship issues, religious deconstruction and trauma. My goal is to empower my clients to practice self-compassion, lean into vulnerability, strengthen their resilience, and create a meaningful life they love. I believe in the power of the mind-body connection and I am passionate about helping people learn to get out of their own heads and into their body in order to calm anxiety, feel more grounded, and regulate their nervous system.

We are not living in easy times but in my practice I help people use therapy to create a better life. Many people struggle with anxiety or depression. Some have lives complicated by ADHD. In my practice I see clients who are trapped in a toxic workplace, looking to change careers, or dating the wrong person. Others are challenged by the mental illness of a family member or loved one, or they are navigating the complexities of being a first or second generation American. People may be aware of their self defeating patterns of behavior but need strategies to reboot, feel agency, develop coping strategies and reclaim their lives.

"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" (Leonard Cohen). It's not your imagination. Life has gotten harder over the past couple of years. And when life gets harder, our "issues" and problems tend to get larger. Relationships may be strained. You may feel anxious and overwhelmed. Yet you know in your core that life can be better. I'm glad you've reached out to me! Let me help you navigate through the rough spots by accessing the strengths that lie within you. Together we will locate, nurture and expand the light in your life so you can feel better, function more effectively, and get the tools you need to cope.

Listening defines my approach to your treatment. A major difference in working with a psychoanalyst as opposed to other mental health practitioners is the careful, consistent, deep attention a psychoanalyst gives to listening. Change can occur because the first emphasis of this treatment is understanding, rather than feeling pressured to "do" something. Psychoanalysts develop this skill by engaging in extensive institute training beyond that required for their license. My goal is for you to achieve substantive, durable change through a collaborative approach to understanding the deeper meanings and causes of problems you face.

Starting therapy can be difficult and at the same time result in amazing benefits like gaining introspection into your life. Learning more about yourself can open you up to a wealth of opportunities for personal growth. I believe in helping you navigate current issues by understanding their underlying causes. Some key tenants to the therapy I provide are helping you understand your feelings, creating goals, and providing a safe space for growth.

We often feel that we have to deal with our struggles on our own, to shoulder the burden ourselves, and I think it can be a great relief to learn that there is no need for us to go it alone. Therapy provides an opportunity to express thoughts and feelings that may not otherwise see the light of day. Whether you are looking into therapy because you are feeling anxious or depressed, or because you find relationships difficult or unfulfilling, or because you are feeling the effects of trauma – it is my job to help you navigate unexplored parts of yourself and thus come to a better understanding of your place in the world.

I practice in both NYC and Hastings. I draw on my clinical, activist and legal backgrounds. I work primarily with individuals and couples and in that work, I draw on Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), for which I have been trained. I also draw on my extensive expertise in working with trauma and attachment. I incorporate sensory or body-based modalities as we go and when relevant, I create room to explore how our political culture impacts our felt sense of well-being. I am an active presence in the room and I use both humor and authentic connection.

Therapy is one of the best investments you will make, and it will change your life. You are here because you are ready for change. You know you are meant to live the life you always envisioned and to feel your inherent worth. Maybe right now you're feeling anxious, stuck, down, or overwhelmed. Maybe past memories keep coming up and are preventing you from moving forward. Through allowing yourself to heal, feel self-compassion, unlearn self-limiting beliefs, and develop a healthy connection with yourself and with others, you will naturally feel more aligned in life.

Gay men and lesbian women face many challenges that are specific to them. It is important to find a therapist that understands your unique experience as a queer person in a culture that promotes heterosexuality as the norm. Whether it's past traumas or internalizing the stigma that we have been exposed to, we all have life events that impact the way we see the world today. For queer people, our worldview may be impacted by our time in the closet, messages we receive from media, and the different communities we belong to.

Life is full of abundant opportunities that are within your reach. However, there are times when it can feel as though you are watching the world go by from a passenger seat - perhaps you find yourself not acting in your own self-interest or are overloaded by the noise of a cluttered mind. In these moments, it can feel challenging to regain a sense of self and select the most fulfilling path forward. I invite you to co-create a space of holistic healing that fosters self-exploration, allowing you to feel more at home in your mind and body, and continue forward from a place of authenticity and empowerment.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in New York?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
