Hey! I'm Thomas, and I'd like to tell you a bit about myself as a therapist. I really enjoy working with children and young adults (8-18 years old) around anxiety, stress, and feelings of overwhelm in different environments. This usually looks like "behavioral outbursts," "refusal," "avoidance," or much more. I work in a collaborative process with children, families, and even school staff to work towards common goals for a child. I value working as a team to support the child's needs. I also value including and collaborating with your child to create goals for the therapeutic process.

I know how hard it is to seek help when you’re struggling. I get it because I have been there too. You deserve to live fully. You deserve better than scheduling problems, long drives, big bills, and weak outcomes. Maybe you’re afraid it will take years of counseling just to start feeling better. I believe therapy should be a lot more than learning how to cope or survive something. It should help you achieve your goals, thrive in relationships, and live more fully.

I am committed to creating a safe, non-judgmental space for my clients. I see my role as helping people identify self-limiting beliefs, emotional blocks and other barriers that keep them from leading lives consistent with their authentic selves and their values. I combine theoretical and psychological insights with more pragmatic skills training (relaxation, conflict-resolution, communication skills). I have an active, direct counseling style that combines genuine empathic listening with therapeutic challenges.

My goal as a therapist is to help participants uncover their inner strength and ability to adapt to challenging life experiences. I enjoy creating new relationships based on the common goal of growth and I always attempt to make therapy an enjoyable experience, whether working with an 8 year old or a 49 year old! I believe in the power of the therapeutic relationship as well as the opportunities for nature and therapeutic activities to increase personal growth. Most importantly, I believe in the ability for positive change to occur with an individual who is dedicated to this pursuit.

Welcome! You are not alone. It can be challenging to navigate life transitions while trying to discover and understand your true authentic self. Symptoms such as hopelessness, inadequacy, lack of motivation, and racing thoughts can complicate matters more. Many people have also experienced trauma, which can create further barriers to self-growth. You are so courageous for taking this first step toward healing and taking back control of your life. I will create space for you that feels warm, empathetic, non-judgmental, and safe to process your thoughts and feelings while learning new skills to help you cope.

Being human is tough! Each day it seems like there is something new to worry about. The world is falling apart, and the systems we live in are broken. The "This is fine" meme might be feeling a little too real. All the while, you’re just trying to exist and succeed at college and/or work, explore identity in a world that isn’t affirming, heal from difficult past experiences, or maintain the relationships and activities that are important to you. Anxiety, stress, trauma, and marginalization are all competing with what you want to focus on in your life. If this sounds familiar, then hi!

Navigating the complexities of the human experience, your relationship to connection and meaning feels complicated and often challenging. You might be feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, sad and/or a little lost. You want to get un-stuck, or slow down, or feel more connected. You’ve been trying for a long time, and it’s been really hard. I see you. You make sense to me. You don't have to bear that burden alone.

We are bio-psycho-social beings, and an imbalance in one area affects the others. Therapy is a process that can enable you to identify what is making you struggle in your relationships, in your physical body and with your mental health. It can help you find unique ways to make the changes that will empower you to become more resilient and capable of coping with difficult situations, as part of an ongoing learning experience. I believe that each person is a singular and unique human being. With that mindset, I understand my clients own idiosyncratic style, and unique ways of perceiving and managing conflicts.

You really want to talk about it. You don’t! It’s too painful. Or maybe you don’t even know what you feel or what to say. Feeling alone there hurts. Bringing others into what you struggle with most can make you feel worse. It’s hard to not believe something is really wrong, if not with you, then with others. A sense of feeling trapped in this bind, especially as a couple or as a person with trauma, can lead to feelings of hopelessness. Why is it so hard to just to connect?

Welcome! The calming presence of a seasoned therapist can provide much needed respite in an increasingly complex world. At its best, therapy can also help you to get to know yourself better and learn new tools to move forward from a place of self-compassion. I help individuals develop tools to heal from trauma and loss, let go of unhelpful thought and behavior patterns, and identify what they most value at work and in relationships. My deep-seated empathy drives my work with clients, which is informed by my 15 years as a licensed professional counselor and three years as a meditation instructor.

My practice is with clients seeking emotional well-being, a deeper sense of themselves, and an improved ability to cope with the distress that accompanies life's challenges and problems. My approach is shaped by the principle that we all have a basic need to feel safe and to know that we matter. My work is informed and guided by the knowledge that a significant number of people dealing with emotional/mental health problems, and many of those who use alcohol and/or drugs, have experienced some form of childhood or adult abuse, trauma, neglect, invalidation, or chaos.

A common misconception of counseling is that it is meant to "fix" an individual. More accurately, it is a catalyst for emotional stability, successful relationships, and satisfaction in life. Counseling is meant to build upon one's existing strengths resulting in the ability to manage stress in a healthier way. Often one's innate resiliency is overlooked and problems are approached with the assumption of a deficiency or "illness." A more positive, strength based, approach leads to a more intentional life with a grounded presence.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Asheville?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
