My therapeutic philosophy is based on the quote from Albert Einstein, “Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” Many people let false beliefs about themselves hold them back from reaching self-actualization. Everyone deserves to reach the realization or fulfillment of one's talents and potentialities, but sometimes we find ourselves as the fish Einstein describes attempting to climb a tree because we let anxiety, depression, and past trauma become barriers to our fulfillment.

Support and challenge best describes my approach to working with clients. I use a variety of techniques to help address behaviors and thoughts that negatively impact life. I also feel that individual psychotherapy provides an environment for clients to share feelings and talk openly. Change is possible. As a licensed psychologist in Georgia, I have worked with adults with eating and body image issues, depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns for over twenty years. Please give me a call for more information. I look forward to talking with you to determine if I would be a good fit for you.

If you have made your way to my profile, welcome! My name is Whitney and I have a passion for being with people as they navigate the ups and downs of life. Some people have never been provided with a safe place to be themselves and truly be vulnerable, and I strive to create that space for my clients. I often bring aspects of my personality to the therapy room, encouraging clients to do the same! My promise to you is that I will seek to understand your struggles and your worldview. I believe I can help by offering a compassionate ear, coping skills, and a safe place to process emotions.

Though I work with a wide range of clients and a variety of presenting issues, I am particularly drawn to creatives struggling with anxiety and depression. I practice with a feminist focus, striving for equality, advocacy, and equity between all clients and their relationships. My previous experience as an art teacher and artist grants me a deep love for the arts as a tool for healing, which I often use in my practice. I also enjoy working as an ally and advocate for equitable treatment for those who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. My clients include adult (18+ yrs.) individuals and couples.

I thoroughly enjoy working with children, adolescents, young adults, and adults. As a licensed psychologist having worked at different settings and with different age groups, I appreciate the nuance that each person brings to the therapy room. I work collaboratively with clients to figure out the solutions that will best meet each individual’s specific needs. For some, that can mean implementing certain strategies and solutions, while others might require a closer look at one’s identity and close relationships to determine a good path forward. I do my best to ensure that you feel valued, understood, and respected.

Are you prepared to become the best version of yourself? I have been a professional counselor for 15 years and in my experience the only requisite for transformation is a willingness to be open to the change process. Clients that I work with typically feel disconnected and unsatisfied. Whether it be professional stagnation, substance abuse, marital or interpersonal conflict, the person I serve typically feels their lives are not aligning with their expectations or goals. I work in a direct and supportive manner with clients to align behaviors and goals with personal values.

Life can be hard at times. Trust me, I get it. Navigating our interpersonal relationships can be difficult. Whether it is challenges in our romantic relationships, managing our children’s behavior concerns, or establishing healthy boundaries with our friends and family – It can be tough. Struggles in relationships can lead to depression or anxiety, self-doubt, or lack of confidence. Often we know that we want a change, but be unsure how to achieve that change.

My goal as a Licensed Professional Counselor is to create a safe, non-judgmental experience. I assist clients with developing insight into themselves, building skills for managing life more effectively, developing healthy perspectives, and when appropriate, exploring the roots of emotional pain. Therapy can help a person to create a life worth living and find more peace in the present moment. I believe people are capable of change and know how difficult change can be. I find that with positive support and a therapeutic relationship, one can feel stronger and more confident in making positive changes.

My experience includes working with individuals, couples, families, children and adolescents experiencing a wide range of difficulties, in both individual and group sessions, in school, church, community and private practice settings. I understand how challenging it is to seek help and the courage it takes to change. We carry with us the unconscious lessons and ways of being that we learned in our earliest relationships. By uncovering these ineffective life strategies and learning new ways of relating, I am committed to helping you develop the tools you need to achieve lasting transformation in your life.

Does it feel challenging to advocate for yourself, or to voice your needs/desires? Maybe you’re even thinking: “What are my needs or desires?” Does people-pleasing show up when you’re anxious or unsure? Maybe you consider yourself a helper (socially or vocationally!), or maybe you just haven’t had the time or space to consider yourself, your thoughts, or your feelings. My passion lies in sitting with you through your current challenges, centering your lived experiences, and building your toolbox for honoring and moving through your emotions. You deserve kindness, warmth, and a loving relationship with yourself.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Atlanta?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
