I have been a psychotherapist for several decades and have been trained in a variety of therapy approaches: client-centered, psychodynamic, humanistic, relational, feminist/gender, and mindfulness. I work with individual adults and adolescents. I believe in the connections between our youth and our current situations. I see the psychotherapeutic process as a client's journey in which I have been invited to participate. My view of the goal of psychotherapy is to assist a person in making changes to his/her perceptions, interpretations, reactions and/or behavior in order to enhance the quality of that person's life.
I have worked extensively with depression, anxiety and anger issues, especially as triggered by life crises such as death, divorce, childbirth and also as related to trauma such as physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse. Therapy should assist clients in understanding, managaing and/or modifying states of mind/mood that are hurtful to them.
My approach is to meet clients where they currently are, to learn what their hopes are about what psychotherapy might bring them. From this beginning, I join their search. I will use various therapies that seem appropriate to the client. I do not prescribe medication but work closely with a client's PCP or psychiatrist to coordinate therapy with medication.
