Everyone strives for growth, and we all have resilience, but when you're feeling overwhelmed or emotionally hurt, it can be hard to find that resilience, and move forward. But that's also when you can have the greatest capacity for change. Something is motivating you to seek help; whatever is it, you don’t have to go it alone. I provide an emotionally safe, caring, and non-judgmental space where we can work together to find your unique path forward.

I am passionate about navigating identity and self-worth through challenging life transitions. Generally, I work from a trauma-informed, psychodynamic theoretical perspective. I also incorporate elements of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical-Behavior Therapy, and Narrative Therapy into my treatment approaches. I adjust my approaches based on your individual needs and preferences. I believe that it is important to address the symptoms that cause you distress, but that it is not beneficial to you to focus only on symptom management.

We all are facing challenging situations in our lives, however it can be tremendously helpful if we have a therapist who can provide a trusting relationship in order to resolve those difficult moments. As a therapist, I can support and help clients with an objective and wider perspective. Given my previous clinical experiences of more than 15 years as a medical doctor and psychiatrist in South Korea, I am able to diagnose and approach mental health issues in the best scientific way possible by using a psychiatric knowledge base.

I will help you find a way to connect to others that doesn't feel forced or overwhelming. Feeling sad or angry for no reason; worried that you'll always be alone, that you don't have anything interesting to say or that no-one will accept you for what you are; feeling overlooked or misunderstood; fearful that you'll never have the confidence or discipline to turn things around - these issues can be successfully addressed.

I believe in a holistic approach to therapy. We will take into consideration how you are feeling, emotionally and physically. Positive psychology, CBT , DBT and mindfulness are a few of the approaches I use to manage disabling thoughts and enhance positive emotions in people with depression, anxiety disorders as well as addictions. Sometimes you may have no idea why you feel the way you do. That is ok. I hope to offer you the place to explore your needs, your wants, your fears. Therapy can be scary to start. I promise you it will open your eyes to new possibilities and hope. I will help guide you towards the contentment you seek.

Life can be hard. Young people face a number of challenges-- family stresses, anxiety about growing older and separating from parents, peer pressure, the lure of substances. As adults, we also face painful stressors-- divorce, for example, losses, aging. We can become stuck, overwhelmed, and confused. In my work with adolescents and adults, I offer an engaged, intensive approach that will allow us to understand how longstanding dysfunctional patterns and beliefs affect your daily life. Specialized training and decades of experience have taught me that the better we understand ourselves, the better we can handle challenges and implement adaptive solutions.

I believe that all areas of wellness are important, and acknowledge that everyone is unique in what they value about their own personal wellness. Getting help can be scary and challenging at times, but many believe that the reward of feeling empowered, at ease, and relieved make fighting the fear worth it. Being able to express yourself in a judgment-free and safe space is a great way to release any feelings you may be holding on to. It's also a great way to address any experiences that have left you feeling down or hopeless. I have extensive experience with the courts and issues related to divorce, trauma, and child welfare.

We are all called to evolve beyond our survival level strategies designed to cope with wounding family systems, lineages and social systems. It is possible to integrate the legacy of trauma we have inherited and thrive in this lifetime. We are collectively facing monumental global challenges, socially, politically and environmentally, that amplifies this legacy, and hastens the call for us to cultivate greater capacity to stay present, grounded and lovingly engaged. Returning to wholeness requires reorienting towards mobilizing our rich inner and outer resources, shifting from generating suffering to unlocking liberation.

The population I work with are adults, ages 25+. I offer individual and couples' therapy sessions. My practice as a psychotherapist has always been to help the individual to deal with daily shortcomings and vicissitudes of life. Many times, this is a result of learned behavior acquired in the course of their emotional/psychological developments from early childhood to present.

First and foremost, thank you for seeking out therapy. Choosing to be emotionally open with someone you don’t know can be extremely difficult. You might feel skeptical or anxious, like it’s a waste of time or I’ll judge you for what you tell me. You don’t know me yet, but please trust me when I say that neither of those are true. Regardless of your reason for seeing me, I am your advocate. I will stand with you and help you accomplish whatever it is you want to accomplish. Think of me like your well-informed sidekick.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Ann Arbor?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
