Marital distress is one of the most common and disturbing problems in our society. I am a licensed professional counselor working primarily with couples struggling with infidelity, emotional/cyber affairs and no sex/low sex relationships. Many are considering separation or divorce. These are not problems that suddenly, unexplainably appeared. Most of these couples can reflect back over 5 or 10 years on how their relationship had slowly deteriorated from a lack of communication over important issues such as intimacy, finances or parenting. Often unresolved issues of substance abuse or mental illness have lead to profound disappointment and distress.
Some of these relationships can not be fixed, the wounds are too deep. Some, if they have become abusive, should not be preserved. The good news is many can be fixed, they will never be perfect, but they can become safe and loving and nurturing..
