Counseling with a caring and compassionate individual can be enlightening, strengthening and just the encouragement needed to continue though this journey called life. Sue Warwick has worked in the helping profession for over 30 years. She had counseled in group practice before starting her own private practice called Crossroads Counseling and Consultation almost 9 years ago.

I have been a psychologist in the Tulsa area for 30 years. I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a PhD in Counseling Psychology. I've worked at various mental health agencies over that 30 year span, but most recently Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital. There I was an integral member of the team of psychologists who created the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Program which specialized in the treatment of major depression, bipolar, generalized anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and post traumatic stress. I utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches to help clients reach their goals and become their "best self".

I have been a licensed therapist in Oklahoma for 6 years and primarily worked in the community counseling setting. Proceeding my work within a large agency setting I gained more experience working with BetterHelp. Currently, I am working to grow my own practice. Clients who are wanting to be challenged with a compassionate touch are often a good fit with me. During our sessions we may dig deep to find the events in life that are still affecting you negatively. However, we will also be working on increasing healthy behaviors, thoughts, and emotions (e.g. communication/boundaries, coping skills, adaptive positive thinking).

I have enjoyed the private practice of outpatient mental health in Oklahoma and around the world with our military. In addition to a doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Tulsa, I am a graduate of the Menninger's Institute Program for Community Practitioners of Marriage and Family Therapy. Working with couples who desire to save their marriage and with families struggling to succeed with adolescent challenges are some of my favorite areas of focus. My doctoral level research involved conducting a clinical trial investigating the effectiveness of the EMDR method.

Navigating relationships can be stressful and we often get stuck in patterns of communication that leave us feeling powerless and resentful. In spite of your best efforts do you keep having the same arguments again and again and feel helpless and unable to reconnect? You may feel isolated, trapped, or lonely within your relationship and uncertain how to solve the problems that have arisen over time.

When men get hurt, the first reaction is to lash out or shut down. Neither helps us to understand or process the pain. What no one tells us is that “I don’t want to talk about it” is the first step to locking ourselves into a self-made prison. It's not only destructive to ourselves, but to the people around us. In that prison, pain becomes a wound that festers and makes it difficult for us to enjoy healthy relationships. Logically, the key to getting out of that prison is talking things out. That’s what I'm here for.

Note: All sessions will be offered online. You are an athlete, a performer, a person with a purpose. I want to help you chase after your goals as you pursue greatness. No matter the odds or circumstances you are facing, I believe in coaching someone to help them achieve their maximum potential mentally, emotionally, and physically. The topics we will cover will be with you long after your playing days are over. Of course, I want to see you have success in the current season of your life, but I am also invested in seeing who you become as an individual outside of sport. The Good Lord has a plan for you. Let's talk about it.

Anxiety can cause you to feel uptight, impact your ability to focus, and it can make the simplest tasks feel completely overwhelming. I imagine you've caught yourself thinking "If I could just get organized..." or, "If I could just get started...". Maybe you're a baseball player and can't get out of your hitting slump. Maybe your daily performance is hindered and you cannot seem to dig out of the rut. You may feel embarrassed that you're on this page seeking help for "something I should be able to handle on my own." These feelings of fear, uncertainty, anger, and utter lack of control and direction can be crippling.

I embrace a dialectical worldview in my practice. This means that I willingly acknowledge that multiple truths can exist at the same time. I have witnessed this stance give clients permission to explore their own experiences at a greater depth, and release feelings of shame and guilt. I have observed, first hand, the resiliency for trauma survivors to heal. I am comfortable treating those that are healing from trauma and those that may have caused trauma.

Life is full of unknowns: “When will I get married?”, “Will I get that promotion?”, “Why do I feel so alone?”, “What is my purpose in life?” No matter what unknowns are thrown our way, each person has developed skills to deal with that worry. We acquire these skills over time, through our experiences and upbringing. Some are healthy coping strategies, some are not. Understanding the lens through which we perceive our experiences and the world around us can tell us a lot about how prepared we are for life's unknowns.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Tulsa?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
