I like to work with people that are interested in kindness, personal growth, and human evolution. I am curious about the aspects of our lives where we are hiding from ourselves and am moved to gently expose those areas as we are ready. Those places are guarded because there has been hurt. You and I will take the path of learning to trust, mainly ourselves and know that we are protected. The nervous system is a purposeful messenger telling us there is something to acknowledge and we experience the physical and emotional symptoms; anxiety, panic attacks, depression, misplaced anger, disconnect, unworthiness...

Life can be challenging to navigate. Add to these foundational challenges stress, anxiety, grief, trauma, relational struggles, or the like, and life can feel overwhelming and out of control. The good news? You are not alone in this. I approach counseling with the foundational belief that every individual has inherent value and worth. Because of that, I believe a fulfilled, less overwhelming life is worth pursuing. I would love to help you in that pursuit.

I help teens and adults like you who want to break destructive cycles and gain control of their feelings, relationships and lives. You've tried to manage your stress and anxiety, but the ways that help others don't work (or last) for you. You often feel misunderstood and different from others, while hiding how much you are struggling, Sometimes, this burying of stress and feelings can cause you to hit a breaking point. You are highly sensitive to others feelings, that it seems easier to help others than yourself. You don't want to burden others with your problems or know they can't understand. But you still want to get help, too.

You see a life that you love. You face the challenges of life with courage. Your life is successful and balanced. You are aware of who you are and how you are. You can accept yourself for your strengths, struggles, and traits that make you unique. You do not get too bothered about “others”; what they think and how they act. You only own your life! You become more aware of yourself each day; the natural purpose of thoughts, feelings and actions. You keep what you like and discard what you don’t need or want. Life can be difficult but you know you are empowered and aware. You made therapy work for you.

I work with children, adolescents and adults of all genders and am licensed to treat both mental health and substance use disorders. My focus is on whole person care, which takes into account factors about a person's biology, psychology and social context. When a person becomes more aware of themselves and others, it can often facilitate personal growths. I offer an emotionally safe atmosphere to assist clients in processing without fear of judgement.

Hello! And thank you for considering me to be your therapist. When I think about the times in my life that I have needed help and reached out for it, I have been amazed and grateful when someone reached back. The fact that you are reading this right now demonstrates that you are considering a change of some sort. That takes guts. It is hard work to make a change, but important work nevertheless. Whether it is anxiety, depression, trauma, transitions, building strong relationships, or exploring gender and sexuality, I am motivated to listen to what you need and want.

If college is the best four years of your life, then why do you feel like this? Stressed and alone. Surrounded by people, but struggling to connect. Wanting love, but tired of the games and swiping. Scared of the real world, and still stuck with that vape habit and yoyo diet from high school. Or maybe you were so excited for parenthood, but not for this. This is so loud and hard and nothing like the pictures online. Life transitions - my favorites being college and parenthood - can shake you up and reveal cracks you never knew were there, but they can also shake you loose from your old habits so you can grow.

Although we can't change difficult situations of the past, we can move toward greater self understanding and more fulfilling relationships in the present. I engage with you based on a relationship of two people coming together as equals within the safety of the therapeutic container. My focus is on interpersonal relationship, however, I include art, music, movement, play, and guided imagery as another means to connect with each other and to free the imagination for self discovery.

People seek therapy for a variety of reasons. Some are in crisis, others are at a turning point in their lives, many want to understand and change longstanding patterns that are self-defeating or unsatisfying. I've been in practice for 38 years, and I continue to be deeply curious and interested in people. I'm glad to have the opportunity to assist my clients on their journeys towards more balanced and meaningful lives. I have a general therapy practice, and I've been specializing in the treatment of eating disorders since 1993. I moved to Boone and opened a part time practice here in September 2016.

Finding the right fit with a therapist is so important, but it can feel uncomfortable (sometimes scary) meeting for a first session with a stranger and not knowing if they're going to be a good fit. I'd love the opportunity to get to talk with you; it's my goal to create a safe, warm, and welcoming space where you feel heard, felt, and able to pursue change at your pace. If we meet and you end up feeling I’m not the right fit, I'll be happy to help you find a therapist who you feel is right for YOU. Therapy isn’t about me, it’s about you finding the space and tangible resources you need on your life journey.

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Boone?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
