About Our Program

The Elk River Treatment Program (ERTP) is located in north Alabama and serves boys and girls ages 12 - 18 from across the U.S. Often described as a Hospital without Walls, ERTP is an outdoor therapeutic program equipped with medical facilities and staff. ERTP provides clinically supported diagnostic, assessment and treatment services on a base campus which allows us to offer a year-round accredited education program. ERTP is accredited in Behavioral Health Care by The Joint Commission and is licensed by the Alabama Department of Youth Services. Typical residents present with a dual diagnosis of alcohol and/or substance abuse, and often include, but are not limited to: ADD/ADHD, ODD, bipolar disorder, anxiety, depression, online gaming addiction, adoption/divorce/family issues, academic decline, learning differences, Autism Spectrum Disorder, negative peer relationships, and obesity. We use a Treatment Team approach, Individual Treatment Plans, Physician-Directed Medication Management, Process Groups, Equine Assisted Learning, and Individual, Group and Family Therapy. Therapeutic intervention facilitated by a professional staff halts maladaptive behaviors and assists teens in growing intellectually, emotionally, behaviorally, and spiritually. Our programs include the short-term Elk River Treatment Program, Elk River Transitional Program for advanced residents, and Healthy Lifestyles weight management.

Philosophy

The Elk River Treatment Program is an alternative to wilderness programs or boot camps. We combine the serenity of the outdoors with the necessary indoor facilities to maintain a base camp where residents benefit from individual treatment plans that are developed by a professional, caring staff. Our Treatment Team includes a child/adolescent psychiatrist, physicians, licensed psychologist and counselors, nurse practitioner and registered nurses, dietitian, certified teachers in the classrooms.

Treatment

Therapy includes cognitive behavior modification using a positive peer culture and group group therapy. Therapeutic workshops include abandonment, anger management, goal setting, accountability, communication skills, peer relations, and experiential learning. Specialty groups include AA/NA and optional Bible Study. All programs offer a comprehensive academic program, credit recovery and state certified educators.
