Our subconscious mind holds the memories and perceptions of every experience from childhood to adulthood. As we continue our journey, the unresolved past continues to affect our bodies negatively and influence our thoughts, behaviors, and everyday life on an unconscious level. We may not understand why we feel or react as we do to certain situations or why the same patterns show up every time and unexplained symptoms and circumstances keep repeating themselves. Often this prevents us from moving forward with our lives, achieving clarity and authenticity.

I'm currently accepting new clients, Your brain's being a menace and you want that to change. My goal is to help you navigate that change, recognize the difference between uncomfortable and unhealthy, and create an experience, and a life, that you want to participate in. If you've been in and out of therapy for a long time and struggled to find a fit, you're in my wheelhouse. If you're neurodivergent, neurospicy, got the AuDHD two-for-one special, or are just really, really traumatized (or all of the above!), you're part of the group I work with best.

With 23 years of counseling experience, I have found my passion, working with people who have had a significant loss or are making a life changing transition. For the past 10 years I have worked exclusively with grieving people. I am a Certified Thanatologist from ADEC (Association of Death Education and Counseling) and a Grief Recovery Method Specialist. I have had the opportunity to witness post-traumatic growth through small intentional steps the client takes to facilitate adaptation and integration. Working to find strengths of each client in order to help healing through growth and acceptance.

As a LMFT I have worked over the past 15 years extensively with adults and adolescents experiencing traumas. Trauma can spill over onto family systems, causing pain and suffering to those we love and who love us. Whether our focus together is healing past traumas, unhappiness in relationships, or finding a way to navigate bringing together a new family system - lets start. I strongly believe in the ability of people to heal, grow, and improve their lives within a safe therapeutic environment, to explore their feelings and experiences. I would be honored to be the person you choose to help the healing begin.

My practice is currently full to new clients except for supervision clients. I have been practicing since 1996. I spent eight years at Northwest Youth Services working with teens and their families. I have been in private practice since 2003 and work with individuals, couples and teens. I have a dynamic personal style and use a variety of approaches to help clients improve. I use psychoeducation and a systemic perspective, which looks for the patterns in our behavior. I take on-going training in improving marriage. I have been trained in EMDR, TFT, and other "power therapies" for people with PTSD or long standing trauma.

Therapy outdoors is grounding, expansive, and empowering. We meet in forests and on beaches where our connection to nature can enhance your growth and healing. If you’re feeling stuck in anxious and depressive, possibly trauma-based patterns, or if the changes you want to make have been confined by the therapy room or the computer screen, therapy with/in nature has something for you. Research and wisdom shows that our bodies and minds settle when we are mindful of nature. This healing is grounded in anti-oppression and anti-racist values, and offers respect & gratitude to the Lummi, Nooksack and Coast Salish people.

I'm sorry you are facing stressful times, but glad that you decided to reach out for some help. Most of my counseling experience has come from helping people to learn how to better deal with whatever the issues they are facing, including things like anxiety, depression, stress, life transitions, loss, troubled relationships, and troubled pasts. I teach people how to change what they can in themselves and their circumstances, accept those things they have no power over, and then to cope better with whatever comes their way in the future.

I specialize in facilitating the transformation of acute, complex and developmental trauma through honing and honoring intuition and connection with body, mind and spirit. The way back from emotional overwhelm occurs through reconnecting to our vital self, community and awakening or deepening our connection with the more than human world. Together we will work to identify the root causes of negative behaviors and beliefs, while learning to regulate the nervous system and rewire the brain for maximum vitality and coherence.

My clients often begin therapy due to anxious and/or depressive symptoms emerging from more complex concerns that challenge their pursuits of meaningful living. They may have difficulties managing stress related to their relationships, work or study, and/or identity. Some struggle with the loss of someone or something important to them. Others may feel rudderless, uncertain about how to steer their life in a more fulfilling direction. In all cases I aim to provide a warm, nonjudgmental, and authentic relationship that encourages growth through the exploration of each client's sense of who they are and who they want to become.

Many of us drag our pasts along with us like a ball and chain that clanks loudly whenever we move; we are never able to forget those events and traumas because every time we try to change, the loud noise reminds us of all the things that have hurt us. So…what if we really acknowledge the past, and the terrible hurts, and then grasp, viscerally, that there is nothing we can do about what has happened? What if we ask ourselves if we have to continue to be hurt, to replay old issues and be triggered by them, and let them continue to run, and perhaps even ruin, our lives?

FAQs - About Therapy and Counseling

How can I find a therapist in Bellingham?

Search for nearby therapists or counselors by inputting your city, town, or suburb; or zip code; or a provider’s name into the search bar. From there, you can filter providers by the issues they treat, cost, insurance, gender, and other factors to find providers who are well-suited to your needs. To navigate between locations within the same country, enter a new city or zip code into the search bar.

Learn more about how to find a therapist

Is everyone in the Psychology Today Therapy Directory a licensed therapist?

The Psychology Today directory lists providers who offer legitimate mental health services to the public, including psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and counselors.

Many have been licensed by the country or state where they practice; providers whose license or primary credential has been verified by Psychology Today are signified by a “Verified” symbol. Some clinicians or organizations provide services for which their state or country does not offer licenses, such as pastoral counseling. They may be selectively included without the “Verified” seal.

What’s the difference between a psychologist, a therapist, and a counselor?

Therapists, psychologists, and counselors are all licensed mental health professionals. In the US, psychologists have earned a doctoral degree. The terms “therapist” and “counselor” are used somewhat interchangeably, but generally therapists offer longer-term, mental health care, while counselors offer shorter-term care that may focus on one domain, such as marriage, career, or academic challenges.

Clients should consider factors such as insurance coverage and their primary reason(s) for seeking therapy to determine the type of professional best suited to their needs. Someone struggling with mental health challenges such as depression or anxiety, for example, may wish to seek out a clinical psychologist or therapist, while someone navigating career obstacles or marital upheaval may benefit from seeing a counselor who can offer short-term, targeted support.

What type of therapy is right for me?

The type of therapy best suited to a particular individual depends on several factors, including their primary reason for seeking therapy, their preferred timeline (some therapy types last for a set number of sessions, while others are open-ended), and their personality and preferences—some may prefer a more structured approach. For many individuals, multiple types of therapy could provide a good fit.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost of therapy depends on a number of variables, including location and the therapist’s experience and training. On average, a therapy session in the United States could cost between $100 and $200 or more. If you have insurance, the expense of mental health care is typically lower, but it varies based on your insurance plan details and whether you choose an in-network or out-of-network mental healthcare provider.

What are more affordable or low cost therapy solutions?

Many therapists offer sliding scale payments, usually on a limited number of slots, which consists in an agreement between the therapist and a client to pay a reduced rate. Therapists who provide such arrangements often consider the client's income or ability to pay, but the extent of the discount is ultimately at the therapist's discretion. Furthermore, while group therapy may have different goals and benefits compared to individual therapy, it can be a more affordable solution to address certain types of issues.

Is online therapy cheaper than in-person therapy?

Many therapists charge the same amount for online therapy as they do for in-person therapy—though clients may still find this cost-effective if it cuts down on their transportation costs. Health insurance plans often offer equivalent coverage for online and in-person therapy; indeed, in many places, they are legally required to do so. Text-based or on-demand therapy apps may be cheaper than traditional one-on-one psychotherapy; however, the practice may be less effective and is not likely to be covered by insurance.

Is online therapy a good option?

Therapy conducted online can be just as effective as in-person therapy, as long as there is a strong alliance between the client and the therapist. To find a therapist who provides telehealth services to clients in your area, click “Online Therapy” on the directory homepage and search by your city or town or your zip code.

Are therapy sessions confidential?

Confidentiality is a crucial part of the therapeutic relationship. Therapists in the United States are bound by the regulations set out by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA), which aims to protect sensitive health information. With very few exceptions, a therapist will only discuss their client with others when the client has given their written permission. The instances in which a therapist would be required to disclose personal information are: if a client poses a danger to themselves or others, if the therapist suspects the abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise dependent adult, or if they are legally forced to by court order. These exceptions to the confidentiality agreement are usually discussed with a client before their first session.
