When addiction is present in a family, its effects are not only felt by the addict, they also have a profound impact on the entire family system. By including all family members in the recovery process, I can help the healing begin and offer support for the trauma that everyone has experienced.

I welcome the opportunity to work with couples who are experiencing relationship issues and/or family conflict to find creative ways to resolve the conflict and strengthen the relationship. I also enjoy working with individuals who have experienced negative life events. Exposure to trauma at an early age often affects our lives as adults in profound ways making it difficult for us to maintain healthy relationships, to cope with stressors in non-destructive ways and to experience a consistent positive self image.

Facing things alone can be difficult and sometimes having someone to help is what you need to move forward. I am committed to walking alongside people and helping them reach the place they want to be. That may be to experience less anxiety, worry or depression. Maybe you have experienced something that has left a deep impact on your life and you are feeling stuck in that painful place. Perhaps you are engaging in behaviors that are creating problems in your life and relationships. Partnering with one another we can work together to make the changes you want so you can move forward with less pain and more enjoyment in life.

I view therapy as a partnership and work well with clients who are driven to gain understandings of themselves and life, both autonomously and collaboratively. Every person has their own strengths, which can be harnessed to develop insight and change into their lifestyles and perspectives. I also acknowledge that everyone has their own past experiences that have led them to today. I strive to establish rapport with my clients and a space to feel safe and validated to foster a deeper level of empowerment, personal growth and self-acceptance.

I have worked with many clients to navigate the twists and turns of individual identity discovery and development and have provided an affirming and supportive environment that allows clients the freedom to explore many difficult topics without fear of being judged or criticized. For many individuals and families navigating gender identity can be unfamiliar and uncomfortable and validating and exploring the feelings that arise and wading through the mountains of information on treatment options to develop realistic expectations and create a more supportive environment are primary goals.

Many people go through challenging times and can feel “stuck” in their lives. But with hope, patience, and determination, this can change. People can find the light again in their dark times. We can learn to think and feel differently about ourselves and the world around us. We can learn ways to identify and use our inner strengths that we all have. We can learn to talk about our emotions that are normal and ways to tolerate stress when things are out of our control. These are just a few of many therapeutic approaches I use with clients and their diverse needs.

Navigating family and workplace dynamics are also common sources of struggle.
I have been a psychotherapist since 1990 and work with adults, couples, and families. Empathy, warmth, humor, and compassion are personal qualities I bring to our work, in addition to knowledge of theories and strategies. My experience and maturity help my clients deepen their understanding of themselves and their relationships, assist them to make changes, and accept what cannot be changed. I also keep in mind the impact of early family patterns on current struggles and create space for insight and self-reflection. Lifelong learning does not stop, and I bring this commitment to my practice.

Groups for individuals engaged in sexual abusing, pornography and family members are available.
Effective therapy develops goals for change. Treatment also supports establishing new ways of experiencing life, behaviors and relationships. My private practice emphasizes making change through openness and trust, and building a personal plan that suits your unique life circumstance. There is no prescription for the length of therapy; some changes can occur with a few sessions and others may taken longer. Having realistic goals can help define when therapy is completed. Please call or email me learn more.

Society tells us that being a parent is a special gift. We’re supposed to love every minute of it, be nearly perfect, and never get impatient. That sounds ideal, but the truth is that parenting is hard. Being a kid is hard. I challenge you to find a parent who has never lost their temper, or a child who never complains! And when we do get it right we don’t usually get much recognition. That’s the difficult news. The good news is that parents and children can learn to have stronger connections, more fun together, and actually look forward to their time as a family. You may just need more support, education, and the tools to do it.

The family, whatever it's make-up, provides fertile ground for our growth and development.
We all encounter personal challenges that threaten our sense of well-being and joy. It might be family and relationship tensions, marriage or parenting, or perhaps issues of anxiety or depression. Whatever the need, don't face it alone. Why not reach out and connect with someone who will come alongside you to provide the encouragement and support you need to move forward? You can feel better! Things can change! There is hope! Together we can focus on you gaining a greater measure of emotional, relational, and if faith is important to you, spiritual health. You've shown courage in coming this far! Keep moving forward.

I feel grateful for my job as a therapist everyday. Adolescents, adults, couples, families and parents come to me because they are experiencing depression, anxiety, hopelessness, ongoing family conflict, low self-esteem and other difficulties. If something is not right in your life you can expect me to initially listen intently as we work together to clarify your goals, so that your vision for a different life informs everything we do.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
