I specialize in working with depression, anxiety, anger, family and relationship issues as well as general stressors and life transitions.
If you’re seeking a relatable, compassionate and transparent therapist with an appreciation for depth and understanding (i.e. a human being just like you, other than happening to have a particular training and proficiency), then please consider reading on. If you value commitment, responsiveness, and integrity in a therapist, please know that these are the foundational tenets of my approach. Everyone deserves to feel better through the experience of engaging in the therapeutic process. In the same way that we can heal and recover from medical/physical issues, the same holds true in working with psychological and emotional issues.

As a therapist, I am interested in your thoughts and feelings as well as your beliefs. I am equally interested in the experiences you had growing up in your family. I look at you both as an individual and as a member of a multigenerational family. I believe past experiences shape the core beliefs we have about ourselves and the world and influence the choices we make in the present. Although therapy often focuses on problems, I believe that good therapy also identifies and builds on a client's existing strengths and resources. Good therapy is a respectful collaboration.

Families evolve and change over time. As individuals age and grow, their roles within the family also change. The family can help - or hinder - individual and personal growth. Family work can help to make the family a positive source of support. Family work will help you to step back and observe emotional patterns and processes. There definitely can be family change with only one person in the room working with a therapist. In physics there is an adage: for every action there is a reaction.

I work collaboratively with a seasoned marriage and family clinician, a counselor specializing in adolescents, and a counselor specializing in young children to provide a wraparound approach to treating the family unit.
We sometimes need help navigating life's challenges, whether they occur at home, in school, or in the workplace. Other times you just need someone to listen. Resolving adversity requires trust, resilience and coping mechanisms. Learning to identify triggers and stressors, focus on strengths, and work collaboratively to address concerns in a safe and judgement-free space, can help to produce positive change.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
