I've walked a number of paths in psychotherapy and have worked with many different kinds of people; my adaptability to folks' individual needs is one of my strengths and priorities as a clinician. In recent years, I've developed a passion for working with issues of spirituality, complex trauma, family difficulties, and mood disorders, particularly as related to people in the LGBTQIA community. Healthy and thriving relationships are central to my identity; fostering them with and for my clients is a key aspect of the work I do.

I've been fortunate to have worked in multiple treatment settings that treat for trauma, eating disorders, mental health, personality disorders, family of origin issues, and substance use disorders.
Finding a therapist you feel will be a good fit is always a difficult process. I imagine you're going through endless amounts of nearly identical looking pages and google searches in order to find a therapist you feel will you'll have a connection with. It's an incredibly daunting task to search through all the pages and hope you find a therapist that you believe will be non-judgmental and trustworthy. How do you trust that out of all the countless web pages, you can find a therapist who is honest, non-judgmental, and safe for either yourself or someone you care deeply about. Maybe it can be helpful if I share about my background.

Have you wondered about your partner's reluctance to seek therapy? Perhaps you've approached him with a sincere, "Let’s try couples or family therapy. Something’s not right," only to be met with a bewildered look of confusion and indifference. Women often connect emotionally over coffee with girlfriends; men tend to bond through shared experiences, like watching sports. Navigating the growing pains of the language school of love and the different dialects of each other's hearts fluently is a natural part of a couple's life's journey, and this can also, undoubtedly, serve as a strain on the relationship. But you are not alone!

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
