Are you finding it hard to break free of the same disagreements, while feeling unheard or unrecognized by your partner? I enjoy working with couples and individuals that are struggling with communication, trust, anxiety, depression, recurring disagreements, infidelity and affair recovery, sexual challenges, performance anxiety, and evolving relationship structures. If you want to improve your relationship while addressing what's been avoided in the past, I think we could be a good fit. For couples in crisis, we could discuss Discernment Counseling or an Intensive as a way to address concerns immediately.

Maybe you’re experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, substance abuse, compulsive behaviors, or something else entirely. Things friends and family aren’t equipped to help you deal with. I can help. I’m Doug Maesk, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and I was born and raised in New England, and lived there for 30 years. So I get you. I understand your experience. I know what it's like. As the old saying goes, “you can take the boy out of New England but you can't take New England out of the boy.”

I came to work as a therapist through my own experiences in therapy. These experiences guide my work and deeply inform how I show up as a therapist. I seek to create an environment in therapy where people can express themselves, heal from past harms and trauma, and connect with their purpose. I specialize in working with youth (ages 10 and up), families, young adults, and men across the spectrum of age. I also specialize in supporting people who have caused harm.

I recognize and have a deep respect for the positive impact counseling can have on one's life. Having an impartial third party provide support and help one cope with any number of life's challenges can be invaluable. I believe the best therapists listen without judging and never dismiss or minimize rational or irrational fears as issues that adults "shouldn't" worry about. I practice an eclectic mix of theoretical approaches to empathically help individuals develop personal strengths and improve their self-awareness. My approach is collaborative, supportive, practical, and focuses on personal effectiveness.

As a Credentialed Grief Educator and Counselor, Certified Pet Loss and Bereavement therapist and Ordained Pastor, I try to provide guidance to those going through the pain and sorrow of loss. The loss could be lost love, a pet, friend, sibling, job, relationship...Regardless, when any deep bond is severed, the sadness and broken heart are profound. But loss and grief are not mental health issues. And while there are meds for depression, there is no pill for a broken heart. These are spiritual and emotional matters. Things of the heart and soul. The Grief Journey is complex and demanding. Please let me know if I can help

Psychotherapy is a joint effort to improve self-understanding, change unwanted patterns of behavior, and develop a greater sense of purpose in life. Through an exploration of your development, themes, relationships, and personality we will try to make sense of what may be getting in the way. Most important, we will attempt to identify how the very concerns that brought you to therapy emerge in the context of our relationship so that we might be able to understand them and re-work them together.

(I DO currently have an open slot.) Many people seek therapy because they feel "stuck" in the same relationship patterns, or are finding their relationships unsatisfying, empty, or chaotic. Some hope to find help with low self-esteem/confidence; with difficulty bouncing back from stress or trauma; or with feelings of emptiness or hopelessness. And some seek therapy with the simple goal of understanding themselves more deeply. Therapy can help with all of these goals. If these reasons sound like yours, I may be able to help. My specialty lies at the intersection of personality, relationship problems, and PTSD/trauma.

Do you feel like your past problems, being cheated on, being left, and being emotionally and sexually abused have completely ruined you for love? Do you feel like no matter what you do you will always be alone in a loveless life or worse, you will settle for a person that's not good for you at all? The real problem is that you haven't made the shifts. When you make the shifts you'll have complete control over who you are with, you will walk away from low-quality people, and you will have defeated your inner dark world that brings you back to trash relationships and into that relationship of outstanding sex that's drama free.

To make the decision to enter therapy, whatever your reasons, requires courage and persistence. Maybe you are feeling stuck in your current circumstances or frustrating behavior patterns. Or maybe you struggle with anxiety or depression, or wrestle with the pain of some kind of trauma or abuse. I believe we all are meant to grow and develop; and that some life events or relationships can throw up roadblocks to that natural process of growth. I believe that the combination of insight and hard work with a compassionate and experienced therapist can be very healing and yes, life changing.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
