There’s no one therapeutic approach to help us live happier lives. Recovery from painful experiences, emotional or physical abuse, a complicated hurt-filled relationship, impasses at work, coping mechanisms that no longer help—these different challenges deserve flexible approaches. Childhood skills no longer fit the problems we face as adults. Grief that couldn’t be dealt with then is more complicated now. Relief from depression and anxiety cannot work if confidence, strength, and intimacy are blocked. Understanding the whole person—creating new approaches and thoughtful solutions to problems—is the way I think and work.

I am particularly interested in the intersection of sexuality and emotional intimacy. Some of my clients struggle to love well; others struggle with sex. But all of my clients, perhaps all humans, juggle the sometimes contradictory demands of love and sex. They want to feel safe and loved, but they also want the thrill of adventure. They want to feel known, but they are also intrigued by mystery. They want to feel attached, but they are also turned on by novelty. I enjoy helping individuals and couples explore their potential to find deeper emotional connection and greater sexual freedom.

Everyone comes to psychotherapy with a unique set of concerns; thus, every course of psychotherapy is different. Part of my role is learning how I can be helpful to you in particular. In general, I view therapy as a place for increasing self-awareness. Often, we don't fully understand why we go about our lives as we do - and why we have the difficulties that we have. Without adequate self-awareness, we tend to unwittingly repeat the same patterns. It is only when we understand ourselves as we truly are that we become free to choose new possibilities.

Life can be tough. Trauma, relationships, and brain chemistry may contribute to uncontrollable emotions and the inability to cope with people and situations. It is not easy, and there are no quick fixes, but healing is possible. Everyone is different, and thus therapy should be tailored accordingly to individual needs. Our work will be collaborative to make sure you are getting the support that aligns with your personality, experiences, and goals. My approach emphasizes realistic approaches to meet you where you are.

Worry, Anxiety, Trauma, Depression, Grief, Overwhelming Feelings, Relationship Disasters... these are but a few of the issues that may lead someone to consider a professional who can support and assist you with your core concerns. I specialize in treating the human condition from a holistic perspective, always honoring the uniqueness of each individual and respecting their way of "being" in the world. Our aim together will be to explore and find revelations, resolutions, and solutions. Using a psychoanalytic approach, we will bring to light the driving forces behind the repetitive behaviors that tend to keep us attached to repeated outcomes.

I believe the therapeutic relationship is where the real magic lies. I work with clients around attachment issues/relationships, anxiety, depression, trauma, and psychogenic physical symptoms. A focus will be on how we relate to the people in our lives, looking through a lens of personal history as well as identities like race, gender, sexuality, and class. If there is an area of your life you are distressed by, curious about, or feel needs to change- let’s explore it. Let me work alongside you to find relief from shame, uncover ambivalence, and re-write your story. A restored sense of liberation is possible.

We all deserve to have satisfying relationships with ourselves and others. Sometimes however, things get in the way. We may be unaware of the motivations behind our actions. I specialize in facilitating a safe environment in which these motivations and emotions can be expressed, understood, and worked through. This gained self awareness can lead to improved relationships to oneself and others, while working to achieve one's full potential in life.

I am licensed to practice in MA, NY, RI, and ME, and am available for virtual sessions. I use an integrative approach to psychotherapy, combining insight and skills-based frameworks. I help clients understand how their past experiences and relationships shaped and influence who they are now and how they experience the world (insight), and I help them develop tools for addressing current life situations and for putting that insight to work in moving their lives in the direction they want (skills-based). This approach helps clients link the past which formed them, the present they are living in, and the future they wish to experience.

There are a number of credentials I could share about myself and ways you might decide if I'm the right therapist for you, but honestly, between you and me, what matters is that I love this work. I use theories rooted in an anti-racist, queer liberation, harm reduction, and body-neutral framework. I feel most drawn to this work through an attachment-focused analytical frame. We have all been harmed in relationships, and I believe our healing must also exist in relationships. I know we cannot look at one's personal frame without understanding the systemic and cultural impact that intersectionality has had on one's own experience.

Dissociative Disorders (DID) Therapists

How does therapy for dissociative disorders work?

Dissociation may be triggered by stress or other upsetting circumstances, and therapy can address the traumatic events at the core of an individual’s dissociation. Understanding why a person may dissociate can help the therapist and the individual come up with alternative methods of coping. A person with a dissociative disorder may get stuck on negative thinking, for example, and treatment like Cognitive behavioral therapy is a gold standard for breaking such thinking. And dialectical behavior therapy, for example, can help a person manage their anguish through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for dissociative disorders?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, schema therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful memories and past traumas. These therapies work to integrate an individual's different identities into one person.

Are there specific medications for dissociation?

There are no specific medications prescribed for dissociative disorders. However, psychosis, depression, anxiety, and/or panic often co-occur in dissociative disorders. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for any accompanying symptom—which may include antipsychotics like aripiprazole, antidepressants like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or anti-anxiety drugs like benzodiazepines.

How often and how long are therapy sessions?

Like any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. There are still other patients, especially those who have co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, who may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months.
