I have extensive experience in working with adolescents and families, and in the treatment of eating disorders.
I specialize in helping clients make the changes they need to have a satisfying and meaningful life. I believe that psychotherapy is about more than just talking things through--it is also about learning to deal with the problems life brings, whether by learning ways new ways of coping, practicing acceptance, or making sure that you are building the life you want. I enjoy working with adults and adolescents, either individually or with their families.

Every one of us is capable of deeply shifting our experience to ultimately live the life we most want. While life events can take us off track, the way we meet those unfolding moments creates our path. Too often we harden, and as we armor ourselves we become cut off from our own extraordinary inner healing capacities. Habitual thoughts and behaviors manifest in response to painful and difficult experiences, clouding our ability to truly see without constraint. We all have the ability to cut through those clouds, to feel more awake and alive, and to become the best version of ourselves.

Thank you for taking a moment to read about me and my practice! I help couples find ways to feel connected, respected, and loved. If you feel dissatisfied, scared, or confused about relationships with others (and your relationship with yourself!) in your life, I can help. Research suggests that the best predictor of therapeutic success is the relationship one has with the therapist, not the type of therapy used. Finding someone who fits you is the most important part of this work. If you'd like to see if my approach would work for you, please visit my website at kategreenenlmft.com.

At Gray Matters, we help clients reach their emotional wellness goals using a variety of modalities. Meeting clients where they are, we offer single, short-term, long-term, and maintenance sessions through coaching, counseling, psychotherapy, consultation, and mediation. This is not a place to merely 'vent' about problems. Here, clients are active participants in identifying issues and taking the necessary steps to resolve those issues both during and in-between sessions.

What happened to the joy you used to feel? When did you and your partner start living parallel lives? Sometimes you wonder if you can find your way back. You want to feel happy again. When things are going well, contentment and a sense of well-being flow. Sometimes life begins to feel too much to deal with alone. What felt easy can begin to feel difficult. What used to bring you joy now leaves you feeling indifferent. Your relationship may not be getting the attention it needs. Counseling held within a spiritual perspective can help.

In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy didn't know she had the way back to Kansas with her all along, but she knew she had to start somewhere. The decision to begin therapy can feel like that, sometimes requiring a lot of courage. And like Dorothy in her quest to get back home, being in therapy opens up the opportunity to find something important and precious. It can help you reclaim what's been lost, or it can guide you to something new and different. It supports you in becoming free of persistent patterns and obstacles, awakening potentials you sense are there but don't know how to tap into.

I have been a psychotherapist for over 40 years with individuals and couples. I consider myself a spiritual psychologist and a relationship counselor. I use a synthesis of body-mind, mindfulness and relational approaches. My focus is to support the person to stand in their own strength, courage and compassion. As they feel their own sense of worth then they are more able to express this in relationship, the creative arts, or work. "When inward tenderness finds the secret hurt, Pain itself will crack the rock and AH! LET THE SOUL EMERGE. Rumi

I really appreciate clients who are willing to look at themselves and are brave enough to ask for help. Asking for help shows a desire to understand themselves on a deeper more spiritual level. I work with people going through transitions in life ages 4-94. It doesn't matter the age, it is the heart behind the age that counts. I work with individuals, family, couples, and those working on addictions issues that are facing crossroads in their life. Therapy gives hope and renewed vision and allows support to those facing the fear of change.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
