In my experience, therapy can bring about real and lasting change. My approach to therapy is integrative: we will consider all the relevant biological, psychological and environmental influences upon your well-being. EMDR sessions are available when appropriate; I trained with the Parnell Institute (information here: parnellemdr.com). We will focus on the changes you want to make and help you develop the life you want to live. I have been in practice as a licensed psychologist for the past 30 years. Since 2001, I have practiced and lived in Carson City where I have raised my family. I work with individuals ages 16 to 75 years old.

I train and supervise therapists, served on the Nevada Board of Marriage and Family Therapist Examiners, and am a licensed psychologist.
My interest is in helping people make significant positive changes in their lives. We have designed an especially attractive office and now added telehealth. Not only do I provide traditional counseling and therapy for individuals of all ages and families, but I also offer services to achieve optimal performance and wellness. Whenever appropriate, these services are complimented with the use of innovative technologies. For example, since 1992 I have used EEG biofeedback for brain training to manage attention and memory difficulties, migraine headaches, head injures, addictions, pain, depression, and anxiety.

Not accepting new clients. Hi there! Do you find yourself awake at 1:00 a.m. scrolling through the therapist ads, thinking that it may be time to talk to someone about your struggles? Do you find yourself feeling irritable, overwhelmed, or have you lost your sense of passion in life? Are you having difficulty in your interpersonal relationships or marriage? I honor you for being brave enough to take these first steps. I respect the coping mechanisms that have gotten you this far, and it would be a privilege to help guide you, empower you, and collaborate with you as you embark on your own unique path of self discovery.

The younger the child the more important it is that the parent(s) and family be an active partner in the therapy.
Our mission is to advocate for couples, children and families with mental and behavioral health needs, To ensure that each client is provided with the means necessary to gain independence, self esteem, better coping and problem solving skills to reach their fullest potential in social and emotional growth. Life events such as parental job loss, family stress, health issues, divorce, domestic violence, frequent anger and hostility between parents, step-parenting, single parenting without support, to name only a few, can derail healthy development and create a cascade of escalating behavior problems at home and in the community.

While I mostly work with children, teens, and their families using a combination of play therapy, parenting skills, and family sessions.
Life's journey can be rough, but no one has to do it alone. My goal is to help clients find hope, healing, and peace while making the changes they want to see in their lives. While accomplishing this is never easy, it can be done by focusing on clients' strengths, learning self-compassion, and building a solid support system.

My experience and expertise provides me with tools from DBT, CBT, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Family Systems, addiction, and attachment approaches to help adolescents and adults achieve best outcomes.
Life can feel chaotic. Whether you are considering your first time in treatment, continuing or returning to treatment, my goal is to provide you with the platform and skills to effectively evaluate, identify and create solutions to help you. It’s important to remember that therapy is not always about ‘fixing’ a problem. Sometimes, it is about learning how to work with the problem by creating awareness, strengthening insight, developing or broadening skills you already have. It is a joint effort between the therapist and the client, working together, to impact change and bring balance to what may otherwise feel out of control.

Relationships can be a great source of health and joy, because they can help us feel fulfilled and connected with others. When relationships are in conflict, it can also be a great source of anxiety or sadness. As a relationship specialist, I focus on strengthening communication skills and increasing your own insight, to help you achieve greater connection and intimacy. I have worked with a wide range of issues, including depression, family conflict, anxiety, loss, mental health diagnoses, and adjustment difficulties. I also enjoy working with blended families, which you know, are so common these days.

My theoretical orientation consists of short-term, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) protocols, incorporating the use of Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP); Psycho-education; Motivational Interviewing; and Family Accommodation Strategies.
My approach to working with those who have an anxiety disorder is best described as "evidenced-based," "solution focused," and short-term in nature (i.e., 10-15 sessions). This is NOT "talk therapy", which can last for years, is incredibly expensive, and generally goes nowhere. My sessions employ a "Cognitive-Behavior Therapy" (CBT) emphasis, along with psycho-education concerning the condition being treated. I want those I work with to have a solid understanding of their condition (e.g., OCD, Chronic Worry, Panic, etc.), and their treatment protocol. Sessions typically last up to 1.5 hours, using state-of-the-art skills training.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
