Finding a therapist you connect with can be a difficult process. I value the step you have taken towards finding one who will be the best fit for you. With every client, I create a nonjudgmental environment with warmth, humor and commitment, where you can be heard. Therapy with me is a dedicated space just for you, where I fully encourage your authentic self to be seen. You will grow and make new meaning out of your experiences, even in the situations which can cause great distress.

Life inevitably involves struggle. The goal of therapy is to understand the source of your current struggles in order to live more fully and effectively. In my experience, life difficulties are either long standing or acute. The enduring difficulties are often the result of underlying patterns that result in feeling stuck, anxious or depressed. These patterns may manifest in relationship problems, parenting difficulties or low self esteem. Acute situations, such as death or divorce, take time to process and can trigger earlier losses. In either situation, the wish to function and feel better is what motivates us to seek therapy.

Making the choice to seek and begin therapy is positive and courageous. It's often a valuable step toward resolving the issues that are blocking the pleasure and fulfillment you deserve. Are you feeling depressed or anxious? Poor body image? Do you have concerns about your sexual functioning? Issues with libido? Pain or discomfort with sexual activities? Having relationship difficulties? Struggling with sexual identity, orientation, or gender expression? Any or all of these can impact your overall well being. I aim to support your capacity to grow and change, feel grounded, and to live to your highest possibility!

The most important aspect of therapy is the “fit” between therapist and client. I strive to create a safe, supportive space in which you can bring curiosity to your feelings and thoughts. Through exploring these together, I can guide and support you, using various therapy techniques, to reduce symptoms, decrease problematic behaviors, and improve your quality of life. I use components of psychodynamic therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and body-based mindfulness awareness. Please contact me to schedule a free 15-minute consultation. I will return your call or email within 24 hours.

It takes true courage to share a story that contains a history of struggle or abuse. Have you found yourself overwhelmed, anxious, or depressed and want to better understand the triggers? Have you tried to ignore relationship or professional struggles in hopes they would eventually disappear? Have you reflected on past pain, and worry you are overreacting, won’t be believed, or are at fault? Perhaps you’ve achieved those goals related to wealth, fame and success, only to find your “perfect” life does not bring the satisfaction you anticipated. The old strategies no longer serve you, and now you need to try something new.

I love to learn and continue to attend trainings in many different therapeutic techniques and strategies. I believe that therapy should be individualized and truly believe that the therapeutic relationship itself will foster the greatest results. My true passion is giving individuals the tools they need to better manage all of the different roles they play in their own lives. Depending upon the client, I tend to use mostly DBT and CBT related therapeutic techniques.

Transgender Therapists

As a gender-diverse individual, why might I want to see a therapist who is also gender diverse?

A trans or gender-diverse client may want to see a therapist who is also trans or gender diverse because the client may feel safer sharing their experiences and more confident that the therapist will understand, validate, and support them. But trans or gender-diverse clients can also benefit from therapy with cisgender therapists; this is a personal decision based on the connection between the client and the therapist, and if that connection is strong, therapy will be successful.

What if I cannot find a therapist who shares my gender identity?

Therapy can still be effective if a therapist does not share a client’s gender identity; a large body of research indicates that the most important factor in successful therapy is the therapeutic alliance. A therapist can also be interviewed for sensitivity and competence on gender identity and expression to ensure they possess appropriate knowledge and skills. Many therapists have excellent training and extensive experience working with gender-diverse clients, and that expertise can be invaluable despite a therapist not sharing the same firsthand experiences.

How can I recognize a good therapist for working with gender-diverse clients?

An experienced therapist should be able to help clients explore their gender identity and expression, alleviate discomfort related to their gender identity, treat mental health challenges and trauma, address existing relationships and communication with family members and loved ones, and determine the next steps pertaining to nonmedical or medical gender-affirming interventions. To recognize a good therapist, clients can ask about these topics and explore their comfort and connection with the clinician.

How might I inquire about a therapist’s experience working with transgender clients?

Clients should feel comfortable asking therapists directly about their experience working with transgender or gender-diverse clientele. For example, clients may ask about the therapist’s training and education with regard to gender identity, how many trans clients they’ve worked with in the past, and what sorts of matters were discussed. You may wish to inquire how a therapist specifically supports the needs of transgender clients or clients questioning their gender identity. A good clinician who is nonetheless not the right fit for you is often happy to make referrals to others based on the concerns you articulate in a preliminary conversation.
