Sometimes, the mental and emotional load of life can feel overwhelming. You’re being pulled in a million different directions and trying to meet what can feel like impossible demands. You have so much going on that you start to feel like you’ve lost yourself. The feelings of depression and anxiety start to creep in, and you find yourself leaning on unhealthy behaviors like substance use or mindless doom scrolling on your phone to cope and distract. It doesn't have to be this way- I can help.

️If our greatest strength is our greatest weakness, what's yours? Sometimes our skills to survive get in our way to thrive. The challenge shows up in my clients' relationships, careers, substance use, and parenting. If you're stuck in a cycle, harassed by a self-critic, losing love, or repeating the same old battles against anxiety and depression, you may not be thriving in the way you were meant to. I want to know why.

Issues of mood, stress, relationships, and behavior, including addiction to substances, are areas of focus.
Thinking and feeling in ways that allow you to engage your daily life, others, and your personal goals with energy, creativity, and effectiveness is the thrust of my approach and practice. Identifying patterns that restrict cognitive and behavioral functioning, preventing understanding and integration of personal and interpersonal dynamics is a key focus. Increasing self awareness and understanding through enhancing mindfulness, expanding thinking about self and others, and developing behavior patterns that mobilize personal strengths, assets, and motivation is the goal of the work.

I have 20 years experience in the counseling field where I started in helping people with substance use concerns and still hold that passion.
I believe that counseling doesn't come with a manual or a "cookie-cutter" approach. You are a person with feelings and thoughts unique to your own concerns and issues. I don't approach our counseling relationship based on your diagnosis or societal labels. I try to assist according to how you see your world and recognize that we all make different choices. We don't have to be held captive to a mental illness and I will help you try to find the "keys to those locks".

I hold advanced degrees in both Theology and Counseling and I have completed postgraduate clinical training in Couples Counseling, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and in the treatment of Substance Use Disorders.
Relationships are the clients I am most passionate about working with. I thrive on facilitating healing and growth in the sacred space between two people, that special connection that can be so energizing and vital. I have discovered the joy of seeing not only relationships heal and grow, but also partners in relationships. Your relationship offers great potential for you and your partner. You were wounded in relationships earlier in life; we all were. Here is the good news: you can heal in your current relationship and so can your partner. The two of you can do the hard work; I can help!

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
