I am a couples therapist and have had extensive training and experience using the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy.
Welcome. Are you are part of a couple who is experiencing hurt, disappointment, anxiety and pain as a result of trying to talk to your partner about something that matters to you? Maybe it is the children, the in-laws, role division, finances. Whatever the topic, you don't seem to be able to get past your differences and get your partner to understand your perspective. Maybe you have even developed a repeated and negative cycle and feel disconnected and frustrated with your partner.

Like so many of us, life has had some unexpected twists and turns. Whether you are grieving, sensing a growing distance with your spouse, having trouble taking care of your family, struggling to form meaningful relationships, recovering from a divorce or break up, unsure how to help your adult children, experiencing mood swings, struggling with work or school, relocating, struggling with pregnancy or learning that being a mom or dad is a lot harder than you imagined, I can help you feel less overwhelmed and more fulfilled. My goal is to help you feel better by providing direct, honest, respectful, and supportive feedback.

I enjoy working with individuals who are ready to make changes in their life utilizing a holistic approach connecting the mind and body. My approach is warm but direct; I aim to walk alongside you on your therapeutic journey while also challenging you to think deeply about how your choices and patterns are influencing your life. Attending therapy is a vulnerable decision, so being a safe space to process difficult experiences is essential. I work to establish a comfortable, trusting relationship with my clients as we work together to identify, process, and challenge the barriers life puts in their way.

I have provided individual and group counseling to children, youth, and adults with severe mental illness, behavioral and relationship issues, loss and grief, substance use disorders and court ordered services, among others.
Life is beautiful and messy. Recovery is not linear. And healing takes more than just time. It is our experiences from birth to the present that have shaped us to be who we are. Therapy can help peel back those layers of experiences and allow us to better understand how our experiences affected us and learn how to move beyond the past and reshape our future. Perhaps past trauma prevents you from feeling safe and happy or relationship issues are crushing your spirit. Maybe recent loss has triggered pain that seems unbearable or life transitions are very overwhelming.

I have specialized in the healing of trauma for the last 31 years through individual, group, couples work. My expertise is EMDR. After 18 years of using this tool I am still amazed at how profoundly and quickly clients heal from tremendous pain and struggles. EMDR is often considered to be used only and primarily for a discreet trauma like a car accident. In fact, however, EMDR is a tool that incorporates how the brain processes information every night during REM sleep. Since our brains have REM daily, EMDR is a magnificient way to address most of life's problems.

Let's face it, life can feel really dark at times. Everyone struggles with unwanted thoughts and feelings that seem to plague them. Everyone struggles with relationship conflict at some point in their lives. Most people believe that they are alone in their struggles, and they often believe that there is no answer and no way out. All of us want happy and peaceful lives with safe and nurturing relationships, but we often don't know how to create this kind of life. The good news is that these things are within your reach, if you are willing and ready to work hard to challenge yourself.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
