Among the problems I have helped clients resolve are depression, anxiety, anger, sexual, physical, and emotional abuse, eating disorders, body image, and relationship issues as well as decisions about ending relationships, healing from divorce, sexuality, sexual orientation, and dealing with being an ACOA (adult child of an alcoholic).
Are you frustrated with feeling worthless or invisible? Resentful about taking care of others? Need someone to take care of YOU? I specialize in helping women resolve the issues that directly affect them -- body image, feelings, the past, relationships, and children. I believe that the connection we make will help you find solutions that fit for you, become more open and accepting of yourself, and develop a greater capacity for intimacy. You will find a safe and nonjudgmental atmosphere in which you feel validated as you learn to express your emotions and examine your thoughts.

I have expertise treating bulimia, anorexia, binge eating, weight shame, and chronic dieting; ARFID is not my strongest skill set.
Limiting NEW clients to those seeking group counseling. Those seeking Eating Disorder Group treatment can be seen individually; if only interested in individuals, I can put you on my waiting list. Mental Health Support and Wellness group is open; I'm unable to take on individuals seeking individual general mental health counseling. Therapy is an opportunity for you to have support in taking a look at your life and yourself to make a change. Taking a new approach to face your challenges requires courage. I believe that allowing yourself to connect with others, such as in a group, can be an invaluable part of the healing process.

Eating disorders, body positivity, and identity are areas of interest for me.
Psalm 56:8 says "You have kept count of my tossings, put my tears in your bottle. Are they not in your book?" God cares about our problems and doesn't want us to feel alone. As a Christian and a therapist, I have worked on balancing mental health and my faith and I enjoy collaborating with those who want to work on mental health through a faith-based lens. Our individual journeys have highs and lows, and it is important to work on our foundation and our spirituality as part of that journey.

The most important relationship you have is the one with yourself. We all have a story. Telling your story to an attuned listener can be transformational. Healing is a collaborative endeavor. As you share your experiences and I listen, you can become more connected to yourself. I work best with clients looking to address symptoms of trauma, depression, anxiety, stress management, relationship issues, and parenting problems. I believe digging deep into ourselves and learning how our early relationships in life impact our present coping strategies and feelings can help us move towards the future we want.

I feel it is important to offer expert quality care that is compassionate, and tailored to each person's uniqueness as an individual. I have 33 years of clinical experience working with children, teens, families, and adults facing various life challenges. Time passes quickly. We often spend our days unhappy, and stressed. Sometimes it can be difficult to see beyond the hardships, and realize what matters most to us. If you can't change a situation, change your perspective.

I find that many people just want to feel better, be happier, feel less anxious. They want to change their lives or at least become aware of their desire to improve the situation. I like the challenge of assisting people with self-limiting beliefs that can create anything less than a fulfilled and happy life. I enjoy helping people with their relationships, marital or otherwise and relish working with couples, helping them redefine their differences, improve communication and rejuvenate their intimacy, sexuaI and emotional.

Eating Disorders Therapists

What happens in therapy for eating disorders?

In therapy for eating disorders, patients typically describe their eating and exercise behaviors, their patterns of eating in relation to stress, their beliefs about their body, the ways their eating behavior affects their relationships, and their desire (or lack of it) to change. Such information helps the therapist understand the origins of the disorder and the role it plays in the patient’s life, important for guiding treatment. Attitudes and feelings about food and eating, body weight, and physical appearance are common topics of discussion throughout treatment.

What therapy types help with eating disorders?

Once any acute medical or psychiatric emergency is resolved, psychoactive medication is often prescribed, requiring the supervision of a psychiatrist. In addition, patients receive some form of nutritional counseling along with one or more forms of psychotherapy. For adolescents, family-based treatment is empirically validated and considered the first line of treatment; parents and their children meet weekly with a clinician as the adults are coached on how to nourish and psychologically support the young patient. Adults typically receive some form of individual psychotherapy, intended to resolve the cognitive and behavioral disturbances that underlie the disorder and to relieve the mood disturbances that accompany it. In addition, patients may also be helped by group therapy.

What is the goal of therapy for eating disorders?

The most immediate goal of treatment for eating disorders is to save the life of people who are on a path of starving themselves to death or engaging in eating patterns that are doing irreparable physical harm to their body. Once the acute medical danger is past, therapy is required to understand the nature of the disordered eating and/or exercise patterns, establish healthy eating behavior, and to tackle the many erroneous beliefs and distorted self-perceptions that underlie eating disorders and continue to pose a threat to health and life. Therapy also addresses the impaired mood that not only accompanies eating disorders but intensifies the danger to health and life.

What are the limitations of therapy for eating disorders?

Therapy can be very helpful for eating disorders—but that can happen only after people recognize they have a condition that must be treated. Especially with anorexia, the distortions in self-image that accompany the disorder can keep people from acknowledging they have a problem. Individuals may in fact see their eating disorder as a badge of self-control. Those with binge-eating disorder may feel too ashamed to seek help. Therapy cannot help those who do not avail themselves of it.

How long does therapy last for eating disorders?

Because of their complexity, recovery from eating disorders is usually a long-term process—measured in months and years— often marked by setbacks and relapse. Some form of help, such as individual or group therapy, may be advisable for much of that time. It is a general rule of thumb that the longer the illness has endured and the dysregulated eating behavior has taken root, the longer treatment is likely to be needed.
