I work collaboratively with clients who are struggling with feelings of anxiety, life transitions, genuine connections, relationship issues, attachment, bonding and adoption-related issues. I believe in the strength of families and individuals and I will collaborate with you by building on those strengths during the therapeutic process. I believe we all have strengths we can draw from which make us a stronger healthier human being. I believe in looking at therapy as a part of a holistic maintenance we as humans should all participate in. We are exercising our brains and emotions to strengthen who we are and who we strive to be.

I have extensive experience with intimate partner violence/narcissistic abuse recovery, eating disorders, overachievers who are exhausted and want big change, traditionally marginalized people (BIPOC/LGBTQ/etc), family secrets, adoption/foster care, pre & post adoption search/reunion, DNA discoveries, identity distress, and overlapping issues.
Virtual services available CO/FL/NC/TX/VA, in-person TX/NC. Regardless of family structure, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, race, or other minority status, you are welcome. People who come to me are often asking themselves: What's wrong with me? Who am I/Where did I come from? Is what happened to me abuse? Why did my family keep this secret? Why can't I get over 'it'? What do I do, now that I know the truth? I've spent my life overachieving, so why don't I feel better yet? Maybe I'm making a big deal out of nothing.

With more than 20 years of clinical experience working with adults, adolescents, and families in a number of different clinical settings, some of the issues I have helped many individuals and families resolve are issues related to: grief, loss, self-esteem, shame, anxiety, trauma, divorce, step/blended families, adoption, depression, behavior problems.
You've already tried all you can think of, but asking for help is hard! It takes courage to take that step toward change. You don't have to 'go it' alone. How do you find the 'right fit'? If you are wanting to feel comfortable in your own skin, wanting home be 'a safe place to land', wish for better connections, communication, and ease, then call to schedule. Together we can we can create the change you crave. Whether through individual counseling, family therapy, or in one of my groups: feel better, stop hurting, live happier, get relief, experience more ease, connection with yourself and others, and live with authenticity.

Everyone deserves to be heard, understood, and the chance to lead a happy, healthy, fulfilling life. No one is meant to do this work alone. I believe that for most of us, it takes support from another person to work through, heal, grow, and accept challenges life has given us. We all have power and wisdom inside us. Together we will look at what has hindered you to find what you are looking for. To me, this looks a little different for everyone.

As we journey through this path call life, we experience a lot. We deal with some good things and some not-so-good things. It is those things we experience where we come away with scars, scrapes, and bruises (physically and emotionally). Oftentimes we wish those things had not happened and we wonder how do we get through them. Those are the things that will bring you to TJ’S Healing Space: A Space to Heal. It will be a place you can come to work on those issues of life. You will be supported in your journey to heal in the areas you desire."Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced".JB

I strive to serve the community around me and advocate for those who are in need. I focus on psychotherapeutic models to aid individuals in understanding the role their brain plays in treatment. Educating individuals about brain structure, function, development, and explaining how neurobiology can be applied to individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and other disorders. Interpersonal neurobiology of human development aids us to understand that structure & function of the mind & brain are shaped by our experiences especially involving emotional relationships.

I’ve been a therapist for a long time and I’ve developed a style of my own, characterized by the use of humor and direct communication. Life is tough — we all struggle — with depression, anxiety, relationships, work, family, etc. it is often helpful to discuss life’s dilemmas with an objective listener. It is my goal to help each client find the path that is right for them.

LCSW trained in CBT and motivational interviewing, as well as TBRI. I have worked with domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, veterans, and kids and teenagers. I love working with teens and kids, and I have a specialized background in trauma of all kinds. To me, therapy is about the connection between the therapist and the client, and about that attunement and understanding. Beyond that, all the training in the world is secondary!

I find that respect, genuineness, support and empathy are at the heart of my Psychotherapy practice.I feel that successful therapy is a collaboration between you and I, and is motivated by your needs. Regardless of your goals I can support you in your process. Some people desire to solve an immediate problem, others desire long term depth work. I can be your guide in either type of work. At times we can feel overwhelmed and not know where to turn, a kind, non judgmental, insightful, skilled therapist can help. When we experience challenges we can all benefit from support.

Adoption Therapists

Does my adopted child need therapy?

Not every adopted child needs therapy. However, many can benefit from seeing an adoption-informed therapist, especially if they were victims of abuse or neglect, appear withdrawn or disconnected, have behavioral or developmental issues (which may or may not be related to their adoption), are struggling with feelings of grief or loss surrounding their birth parents, or find it difficult to establish an identity, a challenge that often becomes most apparent during adolescence.

When should adoptive parents seek therapy?

Prospective parents can benefit from therapy even before an adoption—for example, to voice worries and fears; to reconcile infertility struggles, if relevant; or simply to prepare themselves for parenthood. After the adoption, parents who are struggling to bond with their child; are unsure how to talk about adoption or related issues, such as race; or whose child is dealing with developmental, behavioral, or psychiatric concerns can address these and other issues with the help of an adoption-competent therapist.

Is family therapy appropriate for adoptive families?

Family therapy can be invaluable for strengthening the bond between adoptive parents and children, helping the latter feel more secure in their place in the family. Family therapy can also help adoptive families navigate complex communication issues—for example, parents who feel uncomfortable discussing race with their child, who in turn feels invalidated by their silence, or a child who has questions about his birth parents but avoids asking them out of fear of hurting his adoptive parents’ feelings.

What therapy is not appropriate for adoption issues?

A discredited therapy known as “attachment therapy” (sometimes called “holding therapy” or “rebirthing therapy”) should not be used to treat adopted and foster children, though it was largely designed for this population. Attachment therapy involves restraining, coercing, and punishing the child in order for them to “release” negative emotions and attach to their new caregivers—techniques that are abusive and dangerous and have even proven fatal in some cases.
