I am trained to provide play therapy, neurofeedback, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy, psychoeducation, sexual abuse treatment and parenting support.
My name is Erin Thomas and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Northern Colorado. In therapy, every client is different and has differing needs for the healing process to occur. This is why the most important step to me in working with a client is establishing a trusting relationship at the beginning of therapy so that I can understand how to help in the most effective way. Connecting with others in a way that supports them through difficult times in their lives has been my passion and I continue to look for new ways to help those who struggle.

My therapeutic areas of passion include trauma (ie: sexual assault, interpersonal violence, child abuse.
Reaching out and allowing somebody to help you sort through pain can be an intimidating process. I understand the courage it takes and because of this I believe in building a strong relationship based on trust. Not every therapist is a good match and I want to respect your time and finances. I offer a free 30-minute consultation to see what it would be like to work together. My goal is to provide a safe space for your story and to help you achieve healthy relationships and self-worth. I would be honored to be part of your healing process.

My experience has been working with adolescents and adults on topics concerning Sexual Assault, LQBTQIA+ Identity Exploration, Relationship Issues, and Substance Use.
“I feel lost and alone” “I feel uncomfortable in my own skin” “I worry about things out of my control” “I feel like I let my loved ones down” “I feel so disconnected from my partner”. These thoughts and feelings can be overwhelming, but you don’t have to face them alone. Together we will work to find solutions that work best for YOU. You are the expert in your own story. Life is full of challenges and I believe seeking support can be one of the toughest challenges we face. By looking at my profile, you’ve taken the first step to reach out for help which requires a lot of bravery - you should be so proud of yourself.

Welcome! Bienvenidos! Finding the right therapist can be a process. I would be a good fit if you are looking for a therapist who is highly compassionate and caring, sometimes maybe a little bit funny, while also gently challenging you as we move towards your goals together. I have a lot of experience working with individual survivors of trauma, helping them move through trauma's impacts to reclaim their lives. I am trained in various theoretical modalities including IFS and EMDR, but I also know that sometimes people just need a safe place to talk and process life. Ingles es mi primer idioma, pero también ofresco terapia en español.

You’re struggling with past painful experiences impacting your current relationships & preventing you from living life on your terms. Past therapists with traditional, rigid & impersonal approaches were not helpful for you; leaving you feeling that nothing will ever help or change. I believe healing is possible & therapy incorporating an understanding of oppressive systems we navigate can provide a space to heal. Challenging internal messaging rooted in trauma & systems of oppression can help turn off the auto-pilot or get off the merry-go-round to live a life of meaningful choice, authenticity, connection, belonging & joy.

I have been working in the mental health field for over 40 years. I started working in mental health facilities in my early 20's while I was in college. I have worked with adults and adolescents in all kinds of modalities, yet I seemed to focus more toward young people and their families with substance abuse problems and anxiety. Some of that stems from having to deal with my own addictions in my late teens and finally getting clean and sober at age 20. Thus, I understand what it is like to be overwhelmed by addiction and the need to engage in a recovery process.

We are accepting new clients! We are relationship specialists! Patterns in relationships can keep partners unheard, frustrated, exhausted, and alone. It might be frequent fights, or conflict that escalates, or a desire for a deeper connection. I help couples with presentations ranging from moving past affairs and high conflict to premarital checkups. Together we can get to a clearer level of understanding and break out of your pattern. In nourishing a relationship, we build a safe haven of comfort and joy which gives the strength to face life challenges. This powerful force, called love, is the most important thing in this life.

I currently work with clients in Washington State via telehealth, and have an in-person office in Colorado. I enjoy working with people of all ages and experiences, though I have particular insight into challenges more specific to women including body image, self-criticism, anxiety, perfectionisms, depression, shame, parenting, relationships, sex, and boundaries. Mental health is about holding balances in one's life, and at the core, restoring loving compassion for one's self. I support you to explore your life, belief systems, and goals; to get to the things that might be blocking you from being the support you need.

While there are circumstances that can interfere with feeling safe, content, and in control, many of the problems encountered in life can be improved by getting the right kind of support. As a licensed clinical social worker, it has always been my commitment to partner with individuals and families who are both thinking about, but also ready to make change in their lives.

I am a licensed professional counselor. I work with children ages 13 through 18 as well as with adults. I desire to build strong therapeutic relationships with each of my clients using a person-centered approach. I am able to provide both telehealth and in person counseling. I believe that a person's thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are closely interconnected, and therefore primarily use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I can incorporate focused mindfulness techniques, assertiveness training, and work with the family through periodic family sessions. I am also receiving training in Internal Family Systems therapy (IFS).

Life can be both amazing and terrible. We all experience success and failure, love and loss, moments of bliss and moments of darkness and despair. The inconvenient truth is that almost everything that makes our life rich, full, and meaningful comes with a painful downside. Whatever a persons challenges or difficulties are in life, my work is dedicated to helping them reach their potential and build psychological flexibility. I have extensive experience working with children and adolescents. I have expertise working with clients in the child welfare system, those with life changing events, physical disability and veterans.

Sexual Abuse Therapists

How do therapists treat sexual abuse?

A good therapist will be nonjudgmental and possibly demonstrate active listening, repeating back what the client says to show that they have understood. These skills allow people to feel comfortable discussing their traumatic experiences openly. Some important treatment goals are to restore a sense of safety and to rebuild confidence. In addition to working one-on-one with the patient, a therapist might bring in supportive family members to assist the client.

Do you have to talk extensively about sexual abuse in therapy?

Survivors frequently find it difficult to describe what happened to them out loud. They can even still be in a state of denial if the sexual abuse occurred recently. It is important for survivors to acknowledge that what happened isn’t their fault and to challenge and reappraise any unhealthy feelings or thoughts as they arise. Art therapy and play therapy are useful non-verbal means of communication for some survivors.

How long does treatment for sexual abuse take?

Recovery from sexual abuse can be a long and difficult process. Some survivors are able to move on naturally on their own, given time, while others require the guidance of a trained therapist. Therapy needs vary and can range from a few sessions to months or even years. Healing from sexual abuse takes time, and everyone’s journey will look a little different.

Can trauma symptoms caused by sexual abuse come back after treatment?

As occurs in many cases of trauma, survivors of sexual abuse may experience PTSD-like symptoms long after the abuse has ceased or after an initial round of treatment has occurred. In such a case, there is evidence that prolonged exposure therapy is a useful treatment for survivors, and may be more efficacious than supportive counseling alone. While triggers may continue to cause distress, the idea is that, with time and repeated exposure, their power will fade, allowing survivors to move on with their lives.
