Specializing in resolving loss and trauma, I've been a psychologist for 25+ years. I journey with clients through the tumultuous feelings of grief and trauma to a place of freedom, hope, and new capacity for closeness--experiencing with them the tears and laughter, "Aha's!" and "Oh No's!" that lead to change, growth and liking themselves and life. For helpful, hopeful blogs on resolving depression, grief and anxiety as well as tips on how good therapy works, see www.drmaribeth.com.

Do you live in constant fear? Are you overwhelmed by grief? Do you find yourself feeling sad, withdrawn, irritable, and lonely? Are you struggling to communicate with your teen? Do you often wonder why they behave in certain ways? If so, I would like to help. We all would like to think we are strong enough to overcome these issues on our own, but there comes a time when we need to reach out for additional help. I specialize in treating trauma (specifically sexually abuse), mood disorders, and grief. I also have worked extensively with teens and their families, so I know the problems that are unique to teens.

I offer individual therapy to address various mental health concerns including survivorship, grief, adjustment to change, chronic illness, PTSD, & anxiety/depression.
Have you found yourself lying in bed awake at 2am your thoughts spinning? Maybe you've just gotten news from your doctor and you feel flooded with overwhelm or fear. Perhaps you are feeling lost, fuzzy, and numb after losing someone (or something) that you really loved. If you've found yourself in these situations you likely find it difficult to relate to others who just don't "get it." You probably avoid situations that bring a sense of dread and battle with feelings of hopeless/helplessness. You may even struggle with trusting your body. I know how difficult it is to ask for help, but I am so glad you are here.

This sense of loss feels like an old story - even if you're not sure what's been lost. But in those moments when you dare to be still, you feel the gnawing in your soul. It's easier to just keep busy to escape the emptiness inside. It's possible to go on like this for a very long time. And many people do. You may even have been among the more successful ones. But now something has happened that exposed old wounds and vulnerabilities, and the pain is even harder to ignore. Despite your best efforts, anxiety and depression are getting the better of you, and relational hurts cut deeply. You feel so alone.

Although what you are experiencing may feel beyond your ability to cope, you are not alone. Most individuals find comfort knowing that others have been where they are. Many issues faced are in response to some type of loss. Loss takes many forms: loss of self or personal identity, loss of faculties or mobility, the physical loss of a loved one, relationship loss or the lost dream of a perfect marriage or family, or career loss, to name a few. These losses are often sudden, unexpected, or traumatic experiences that can interrupt your life, derail your goals, affect your relationships, and undermine the flow of life transitions.

What brings you here today? - Stress, anxiety, guilt, loss, or relationship struggles? Anger, hurt, depression, self-identity or self-worth issues? Or maybe you’ve noticed being “triggered” by people or situations, or have trouble letting go of painful events from the past. Perhaps you’re aware of negative patterns, i.e. different partner, job, or location, but still the same issues. Over time, any of these issues can begin to wear you down, affecting you and your relationships with others, including family, friends and loved ones. We are all in need of support at some time. I am here to listen, care, and give you that support.

My experience includes working with clients who present with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, trauma, grief and loss, attachment struggles, and concerns with spirituality.
Understanding ourselves, who we are, how we were raised, why we struggle with the issues we struggle with, how we can change the things we want to, how to improve relationships and be more content with life - these are some of the thoughts and questions most people wrestle with as adults. It has been my privilege for 25+ years to journey with individuals and couples as they ask these vulnerable questions in the therapeutic setting. I am grateful to work with those that take the courageous step of coming to therapy, desiring to work through difficult and painful memories and experiences to move towards greater personal freedom.

Grief Therapists

How long does therapy take for grief?

There is no exact timeline for grief counseling. Some people may start to feel better after just a few sessions, while others may take months or longer to feel relief. Some specific approaches, including some types of CBT, may involve a set number of sessions, or therapy may be open-ended until the patient determines they are ready to wrap up. Just as there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there is no right or wrong way to seek therapy for grief.

When should you seek therapy for grief?

Many people mistakenly believe that their grief needs to be debilitating or all-encompassing to warrant therapy. This is not the case. While people who experience severe, prolonged grief—particularly those who are considering self-harm or engaging in unhealthy substance use—are especially likely to benefit from therapy, so too are people whose grief is less intense but still interfering with well-being or daily functioning. In practice, almost anyone struggling to process a loss could benefit from grief counseling.

Can grief be managed without therapy?

Oftentimes, yes. Grief is a near-universal part of being human, and many find that their grief, while profound, does not stop them from participating in day-to-day life and steadily eases over time without outside help. For others, however, the harsh pain of early grief persists for months or years or leaves them unable to function. This group is especially likely to benefit from seeing a therapist, who can guide them through their grief and help them reconnect with the world.

What happens if grief is left untreated?

Because grief does not in itself necessitate therapy, untreated grief will often resolve on its own. However, for some people—particularly those who would qualify for a diagnosis of prolonged grief disorder—untreated grief can be a source of seemingly endless pain or lead them to withdraw from the world. In such cases, treatment can be indispensable, as it can help an individual adapt to the loss and start living again.
