These are some of the ways that Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is experienced.
Any of these thoughts sound familiar? What if I harm someone? What if I harm myself? What if I act on an urge to do something I really don’t want to do? What if I am a bad person and just fooling everyone? What if I touched something that could contaminate me or my family? What if I want to act on that sexual thought I really didn’t like? What if I go to jail for something I did but forgot or didn't know? What if that thing I did will come back to haunt me? What if I cheat on my partner? What if I am with the 'wrong' partner even though I love my partner? What if my sexual orientation will change even though I don't want it to?

When we live our lives in a state of constant fight-or-flight, we can go into survival mode. Worries, phobias, panic attacks, trauma, obsessive thoughts, avoidant behavior, and/or repetitive/compulsive behaviors can make us feel hopeless and helpless. We can find ourselves overthinking, overanalyzing, and feeling powerless. If you're feeling like life hasn't been moving in a positive direction, find yourself in a state of hypervigilence due to trauma and/or frozen by fears and uncertainty, you CAN find your way out - sometimes we just need some extra support to do so.

I specialize in improving communication, decreasing anxiety and depression, improving daily life for individuals experiencing OCD and eating related issues, and helping all individuals regain a sense of control over their mind and life.
With my degree in Positive Psychology, it provides an evidence-based framework for our work together that focuses on your strengths to help you get from where you are to where you want to be. If you are experiencing symptoms that are preventing you from experiencing joy, or preventing you from fulfilling relationships, talk/psychotherapy provides a space to process past traumatic experiences that could be interfering with your relationships now. If you are not able to communicate effectively as a couple or with your child, couple and family sessions can help heal and reopen a dialogue that can lead to thriving.

Are you overwhelmed with all of the uncertainty in your life? Are the "what ifs" preventing you from sleeping? I am here to offer a safe and supportive space to process and manage your fears so they don't weigh too heavily on your chest. I'm here to challenge and support you to do the hard work. To lean into the unknowns with your head high while remembering you can handle whatever is ahead of you. You're encouraged to take up as much space as needed, and no issue is too much. And you will always be in the driver's seat. Luckily, people say I am a pretty great passenger.

It's the same old pattern repeating itself. Whether it is intrusive thoughts cycling in your mind or self-destructive patterns of behavior, you just want off the roller coaster. A daunting sense of confusion and guilt about what could have been, or what should have been may overwhelm you. Questions like "Why do I do these things?" go unanswered in your head. Relentless efforts to figure these things out yourself have yielded few results. Things only seem to be getting worse. The days are passing and you still aren't living the life you want for yourself. Let's talk about your next steps.

My approach to therapy is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). A core idea in ACT is that trying too hard to get rid of or control our emotions tends to backfire. Instead of trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings (e.g., anxiety & depression), I will help you learn to react differently to them so that you can keep your focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life based on what’s important to you. We will work together to set meaningful goals to address your concerns–whether they relate to life transitions, depression, anxiety, body image, grief/loss, job or academic stress, or gender & sexuality.

How long does OCD treatment take?

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often treated on a weekly or twice-weekly schedule, depending on symptom severity and the client’s preferences. Some clients may start to see a noticeable improvement in symptoms in as little as six weeks, but it’s also possible, especially in more severe cases, for treatment to take several months to a year before significant progress is made.

What happens if OCD is not treated?

Some people with OCD, especially those with mild symptoms, may find that they are able to adapt reasonably well to life with the condition, even if their symptoms never resolve completely. However, many people, particularly those whose symptoms are severe at the outset, find that their obsessions and compulsions grow more intrusive with time, making it harder to maintain relationships, hold down a job, or navigate the world successfully.

Are there medications for OCD?

Medication can be used to treat OCD. The class of drugs most often prescribed are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include fluvoxamine (under the brand name Luvox), fluoxetine (Prozac), and sertraline (Zoloft), among others. In cases of treatment-resistant OCD, other classes of medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants or atypical antipsychotics, may be prescribed. Medication is frequently used in conjunction with therapy.

Can OCD come back after treatment?

Yes. Major life transitions, periods of stress, or other factors can cause symptoms to return or, if they were never fully eradicated, to ramp back up in intensity. For some, these relapses are brief and do not require additional treatment; identifying specific triggers and practicing the skills learned in therapy can help speed their course. For others, returning to therapy for a brief period can help address the underlying stress and strengthen coping mechanisms.
