A core part of humanity is to feel belonging. Many people experience that most intensely during childhood from their family and friends. As we grow older we develop other relationships that give us that sense of belonging. When you experience injuries to those relationships it can leave yo feeling isolated and depressed. When those injuries happen during childhood it is referred to as Developmental Trauma. But trauma is not a life sentence, in fact what many people don't know is that Post-Traumatic Growth is more common than Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I work with individuals and families who want to understand trauma and grow.

Connection and acceptance allow us to move through life with hope, dignity, and the ability to embrace our authentic selves. I use a range of therapeutic techniques that are responsive to client needs, but my core therapeutic approach is rooted in humanistic practice. Humanistic psychology views people as innately good, unique, and capable of growth. We can work towards healing, change and growth while acknowledging the strengths you already have. A core value I have is making therapy accessible, and so I offer virtual cash fee sessions based on financial need with as little gatekeeping as possible. This includes letter writing.

I work well with someone who takes initiative, is motivated to work towards their treatment goals, and wants to learn about mental health. People who are open to feedback and discussion, and this goes both ways! It's very important that we are able to build a therapeutic bond, trust and respect with each other. Humor is appreciated in my sessions, I think laughter is a wonderful coping mechanism!

I believe life is both wonderful and challenging. During challenging times people often feel stuck - it's an awful place to be and finding someone to help you out of stuck can be of great comfort and assistance. I provide compassionate, supportive therapy in a professional and comfortable environment. I explore thoughts, feelings and behaviors that cause people to become stuck and work on practicing new thoughts, feelings and behaviors to become "unstuck". Therapy is a collaborative and dynamic process and I enjoy working with a wide variety of individuals to assist them in getting the most out of their life.

My focus as a counselor is to help you find yourself again. It is so easy to get lost in a relationship, job, parenthood, substances and/or life transition. We start to feel disconnected and out of tune with who we are and what we want out of life. We don't need to figure it out on our own, we get to do it together! Through conscious conversation and changing of perspective we can get unstuck and start to feel more connected to ourselves and our world. You deserve to have someone hold space for you and that's what I do.

Too often people shy away from counseling, but you would be amazed by the positive impact it can have on your life. I am here to support and encourage you, not to tell you what to do. No one is exempt from problems, but how an individual respond's to that problem is key to resolving the issue and helps decrease symptoms such as anxiety and depression which may come with an unwelcome situation. I am licensed to provide services in Alabama, Michigan, and Kentucky.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
