Thank you for considering me as your therapist! My name is LaToya I hold a PhD in social work and I am a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) licensed in Colorado, Texas, and Maine. Throughout my career, I have had the pleasure of assisting my clients in addressing anxiety, attachment concerns, depression, diversity, grief, LGBTQIA support, loss, personal improvements, and transitional concerns. My concentration is mental health and have the ability to diagnose and assess mental health conditions. I have direct experience working with the military, couples, and mental health crises.

As a mental health professional, I have worked with a variety of populations and demographics in hospital, community, home, school, and military settings. I have also previously worked as a banker, athletic coach, and military officer. As my experiences have shaped who I am as a counselor, I have a particular empathy for minority, LGBTQ+, and military clients, though I do consider myself a generalist in my ability to relate to people. Clinically, I address anxiety, depression, and trauma, as well as behavioral and attentional issues, in individual therapy with people of all ages and backgrounds.

Accepting New Clients. Too often people wait...and wait, hoping things will "just get better." Or maybe there is a stigma around seeking mental health services. My passion is helping people who have been stuck for too long, maybe even thinking all hope is gone. Being a veteran myself, and more specifically a Navy Psychologist, has enabled an understanding of this unique population. I am aware of the intricacies in navigating the VA and maintaining security clearances in careers after the military.

I work best with clients who have suffered some form of trauma, have issues with their family, issues with abuse and military members/veterans and the issues they face.

Many of the client's that I work with have the same fight over and over again; maybe it's the dishes, maybe it's his friends, maybe you feel like she's not listening to you, maybe you both drink too much. Without professional help it's so easy to get stuck in a rut. At Kenosis Counseling, I believe in the potential of relationships. By resolving our issues through both vulnerability and committed action a relationship can become a place of peace and joy. I want you to have a relationship that others wished they had. I will help you become each others best friends, strongest allies, and emotional sanctuaries.

More and more people are having trouble knowing who they are or where they belong in life. What we were taught growing up or what we learn from society doesn't make sense or apply any longer. Because of this, we have difficulties from depression to questioning our own belief system. It may appear as confusion, anxiety, anger, or anything that disrupts our day-to-day life. When we feel this way it is a hurt or loss that is almost impossible to describe. My type of counseling presents people with an opportunity to understand why and how they think and feel the way they do and to go deeper than they could have possibly imagined.

I love to help families, couples, and individuals as they navigate conflict, communication difficulties, anxiety, and life-transitions. I have personal experience with inter-cultural relationships and military families. I recognize that we are the product of many influences including the families and cultures we come from, relationships we choose to enter, circumstances and choices we make, etc. When you begin to understand where you come from and who you are, it helps you move in the direction you want to go. It’s my pleasure to walk beside you on your journey as you move toward healing, wholeness, and happiness.

I am an LPCC (Licensed Professional Counselor Credentialing) in the State of Colorado.  My goal for providing counseling is to help my clients through some of life's most difficult times.  Working together and exploring these hardships allows for the client to be able to cultivate and find some of life's most meaningful connections. Having trained in both somatic therapy and EMDR, I help move my clients through some of the most difficult traumas or bereavement as they journey to a greater understanding of self by fostering a more profound connection with the body, mind and spirit.  I enjoy working with a wide range of ages.

I help children, adolescents, and adults overcome challenges and traumatic events that shape their development, self esteem, and interpersonal relationships. I utilize a psychodynamic, client centered treatment approach to address each individual's educational, occupational and interpersonal goals. My specialties include child and adolescent development, couple's communication and parenting, separation and divorce, and the treatment of complex trauma.

I specialize in supporting adults who have ADHD and military family issues. I love working with people who might call themselves “messy,” who have not lived life in the straight line they perceive others to be living Whether it is coping with overwhelm of another PCS or deployment, or fearing they'll be "discovered" as incompetent or lazy; you can trust me to hear your story, even the chapters you might hide from others. My goal is to provide you with the space to explore what is holding you back.

I maintain a full caseload at the Denver Vet Center (a subdivision of the VA) where I focus on combat related PTSD and military sexual trauma. I see individuals and couples. In my private practice, I specialize in personality disorders, particularly borderline personality disorder. I have a master's degree from Denver Seminary in clinical mental health counseling, where I also earned a certificate in theology. My undergrad degree is in philosophy. My unique background as a Mexican American Army veteran schooled in philosophy, theology, and psychology, sets me apart as a therapist.

I am a Licensed Clinician, EMDR trained, with over 30 years of experience with combat veterans, survivors of military sexual trauma and civilians from all walks of life. I also specialize in childhood trauma, anxiety, depression as well as bereavement/grief. I have worked with veterans from WW II and Vietnam to those who have returned from Iraq and Afghanistan. I have a good sense of military culture; I have learned from the veterans. I believe each of us has a unique inner light. However, some experiences we walk through over the course of our lives can progressively dull that light until we struggle finding our joy. I work with clients to identify and understand how past events in their lives may be influencing their current distress levels and to learn new ways of thinking and feeling about these events, accepting with love and integrating these new beliefs for a more body/mind experience.

Each of us experiences moments in life when we are not sure what path to take. We may feel disconnected from our values, distant from those we most want to be close to, and out of balance in our daily rhythm. In the midst of overwhelm, we know something needs to change yet we may not easily see what that is. It may also be that we know what we want to change but we encounter challenges from others or from seemingly immovable obstacles in our world. At times like these, we need a wingman; someone who knows how to help us utilize our strengths so we can chart a course toward what matters most. I would be honored to be your wingman.
