I treat adults who want to make meaningful changes in their lives, or perhaps need a new way to view an old problem. I am a responsive therapist, a real person, not an "mm hmm" therapist. I will listen well, and give feedback, you will not feel you are alone in whatever struggle brings you to my office. Relationships, life changes and transitions, losses - coping - these are some, but by no mean all, of the issues that we might work on together. Seeing a therapist is a positive choice when one feels frustrated or alone.

My practice is oriented towards helping men, young and old, face the challenges of being a man in today's world: learning to be emotionally intimate in relationships, balancing the demands of work and family, managing anger and other destructive impulses, learning to be a more involved and loving father, and finding one's true path in life. Beginning therapy is not easy for many men. I use my extensive experience in working with men to offer both the compassion and directness men need to find the courage within themselves to face these challenges.

Like nature, we ebb and flow through different seasons in life. While some seasons of life can feel overwhelming, these are often the times when we can experience the most growth. Therapy can be a wonderful tool to help individuals seek personal growth, overcome struggle, and thrive in life.

Real change lies in a person’s willingness to become more of who they are rather than trying to become what they are not. You are not a problem to be solved or fixed. Competent therapy offers no gimmicks, no quick fixes-- what matters is a willingness to explore who you are rather than who you "should" be. I cannot promise quick and easy relief from your suffering. What I can promise is my full attention and engagement. Every difficulty is an opportunity; perhaps not a welcome opportunity but your struggle has meaning—you are not satisfied with the status quo, you have not given up.

ADHD Therapists

When should I seek treatment for ADHD?

You should seek treatment for ADHD if you consistently have difficulty with attention, hyperactivity, or impulsivity that interferes with your daily life. Symptoms of ADHD include the inability to sustain attention during tasks, difficulty organizing tasks and activities, being easily distracted, frequent fidgeting or squirming, and talking or interrupting excessively. If these symptoms interfere with your career, academics, or relationships—for example, consistently failing to complete professional projects on time—you should seek an evaluation for ADHD.

How does treatment for ADHD work?

Effective treatment for ADHD often consists of medication, behavioral therapy, and lifestyle changes. Stimulant medications such as Adderall and Ritalin work by altering levels of neurotransmitters in the brain; higher levels of dopamine and norepinephrine are known to improve attention and focus. Therapy works by helping people with ADHD understand the condition, discuss their areas of difficulty, and develop behavioral strategies to manage their symptoms. In some cases, modifying one’s diet and exercise can also help improve symptoms.

Are there specific medications for ADHD?

Medications to treat ADHD are generally stimulants, the most common are Adderall and Ritalin. There are two categories of stimulants: Amphetamines include Adderall, Dyanavel, Vyvanse, and Dexedrine, and methylphenidates include Ritalin, Concerta, Daytrana, Focalin, Quillichew, Quillivant, and Metadate. Non-stimulants and antidepressants may be used as an alternative if stimulants aren’t effective or viable for a particular patient.

How long does treatment for ADHD take?

It’s tough to give an exact time frame because everyone varies. In terms of medications, stimulants begin to work very soon after you take them, generally within the hour. It may take time to identify the right medication and dosage, but the medication itself is fast-acting. In terms of therapy, it takes time to develop skills and put them into practice, but you will likely see improvements within a few weeks or months.
