Typically, this means exploring areas of vulnerability and shame and the patterns and experiences from our family of origin.
If you are going through pain, difficult transitions, or looking for growth and insight, this is the place. Whether your suffering is caused by emotional, physical, or relational distress, you are not alone and you can heal. My desire as a therapist is to bring compassionate curiosity towards your experience, while fostering personal growth and overall wellness. My hope is that through our work, you gain the freedom to feel lovable and valuable as you are right now, make healthy choices in relationships and life that align with your values, and build successful coping tools to navigate whatever unknowns life throws your way.

I have 30 years of experience in the mental health field, including many years working in residential homes for emotionally troubled youth, as director of an outpatient family-based program, and the past 15 years in private practice.
I work with children, adolescents and adults with a curiosity about how we can live more connected and meaningful lives. Often the ways we have learned to adapt to our world (or world view) is no longer effective or relevant. I seek to help create deeper awareness and insight into underlying motives, defenses, and desires. Together we explore patterns that contribute to struggles and dissonance in day to day life.

I focus on helping my clients improve their awareness of the connections between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Though the development of a strong therapeutic relationship, I aim to help clients celebrate their strengths as well identify and challenge the maladaptive patterns that are keeping them stuck. Together we may explore new ways of labeling and expressing emotion, identify problematic interpersonal patterns, or challenge unhelpful mindsets. My approach emphasizes curiosity, not judgment, around the complex topics that often come up during our work together.

It can be easy to lose track of our balance and priorities; many of us spend a lot of our energy tending to others, making sure those we love are okay- but we neglect to check in with ourselves. This can leave us feeling empty, lost, hopeless, and overwhelmed. Clients I work with are seeking balance and clarity. Helping people return to where they feel most like themselves is an amazing process, and I'm proud I can help.

I want to bring hope to whatever situation you are facing. As we work together in individual or couples counseling, I will help facilitate healing, growth, and self-compassion. You may be stressed beyond your limits at home and/or work with our new world realities due to COVID-19. Maybe you are dealing with past or current trauma, or struggling in your relationships. You may find yourself facing grief and loss during this time as our losses have increased due to stay-at-home orders and new ways of living. Many are struggling with anxiety, depression, hopelessness, and feelings of loneliness as a result.

We do not view neurodiversity (ADHD, autism, and bipolar disorder) as an illness or a disorder to be cured or removed. Instead, we view it as an evolutionary adaptation that served essential roles in the growth and development of human civilization. We believe that much of the dysfunction our clients experience is due to having to navigate environments that are not built for them, instead of any inherent deficits within them.

As a psychologist, I offer psychotherapy to individuals experiencing a range of issues impacting their well-being, relationships, and functioning. I believe therapy ultimately involves a collaborative relationship between the therapist and client, which can provide healing, insight, and desired change. I endeavor to help my clients understand and work through 1) what has contributed to their distress, 2) what patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating (consciously or unconsciously) are maintaining their distress, 3) what barriers to change may be present, and 4) possible steps to take to bring change and relief.

I once heard it said that "Mental health problems need to be viewed as proof of our humanity, not an exception to it." Such problems in today's world often present themselves as anxiety, depression, stress, burnout, isolation, stagnation, trauma, relationship strain, etc. and can leave people feeling like they are merely existing rather than living. Does this sound familiar to you? If it does, then a counselor like myself may be able to help you through it.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
