My preferred therapy styles include strengths-based talk therapy, CBT, Brainspotting, play therapy, and meditation for deep seated troubles/trauma from childhood sexual, emotional, physical abuse and neglect.
You deserve to be happy. No matter what has happened, or where you've been. We all have troubles, and we all need a little help sometimes. I am here to help you figure things out. You hold the key to getting better. You know yourself better than anyone, but sometimes when we're close to an issue it's hard to see the bigger picture or the best solutions. We will work together in a safe, non-judgmental space.

I've specialized in relationship and parenting issues, particularly inter-racial relationship issues; alcohol/drug abuse, codependency, adult children of alcoholics, and family of origin issues.
Does being in love mean being in pain? Are you and your significant other having a hard time communicating or getting your needs met? Are you confused, anxious, sad or angry? Are you feeling less motivated? Having difficulty concentrating or sleeping? Do you feel distracted and find it hard to follow through? Are you questioning your goals or feel stuck? Are you questioning your family of origin and feel you have issues from the past that are unresolved? Are you grieving the loss of someone? Do you worry about yourself or your significant other and their bad habits? Are you a survivor?

My experience over the span of my career has included teaching youth about the dangers of tobacco use, advising undergraduate and graduate students about their academic and professional pursuits, counseling both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence, and now offering psychotherapy to individuals, couples, and families.
Being seen and valued for who we truly are, particularly in a space free of judgment, bias, and pretense, is an incredible feeling. When we feel safe to be ourselves, peace and healing naturally follow. From there, we can blossom, grow, and thrive! It often takes that feeling of safety and security for the truest parts of ourselves to be free to emerge. The essence of therapy lies in the therapeutic relationship and the sense of safety that comes with it. Knowing that you are in a space where your confidence is kept, your story is protected, and your whole person is viewed with loving kindness allows for growth.

Many people have lived through terrible events that continue to haunt them, such as sexual assaults, war, child abuse, suicide, violence, near-death experiences, and more. Now the nightmares won't stop, and the memories keep popping into your head. You're on edge, jumpy, and can't relax. You might feel guilty or ashamed about what happened or how you responded. You may isolate from others, lash out, use drugs or alcohol, or consider suicide to escape it all. You're likely exhausted by all the effort to push it away and keep moving forward. If this sounds like you, you might be suffering from PTSD.

Domestic Abuse Therapists

What are the most effective ways to recover from domestic abuse?

Leaving an abusive relationship requires tremendous courage, so survivors in treatment should recognize that they have already completed the most important step. Still, the trauma of physical or emotional abuse can be difficult to process and overcome. Therapy can help survivors process trauma, grief, and difficult emotions, treat relevant mental health symptoms, and create a new framework for boundaries and relationships in the future. For some, support groups can also be an invaluable outlet for healing.

When should an individual seek help for domestic abuse?

Victims of intimate partner violence should seek help immediately. It can take substantial time, planning, energy, and courage to leave an abusive relationship, but starting the process—by seeking therapy, calling the domestic violence hotline, or simply confiding in a loved one—will help them get there. Those who have left abusive relationships but haven’t sought treatment can also greatly benefit from therapy to process and heal from the experience.

What are the consequences of staying in an abusive relationship?

Remaining in an abusive relationship has serious repercussions. In addition to the ongoing threat of physical danger and emotional abuse, research shows that intimate partner violence is associated with a range of mental health disorders including depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, and substance abuse. Therefore it’s important for individuals in an abusive relationship to seek help as soon as possible.

How can you get domestic abuse treatment for someone else?

It can be very complicated to identify and leave an abusive relationship; barriers include the threat of violence, financial instability, and family pressures. Those concerned about a loved one in an abusive relationship should talk to them about the situation, provide them with resources such as the domestic violence hotline, and introduce the idea of seeing a therapist due to their concern for the person’s safety and well-being.
