As NYU faculty and a social worker for 15+ years in medical, foster care, psychiatric and school settings, I provide cutting-edge evidence based treatment.
How you get through a difficult time does matter. Insight oriented work is an incredibly powerful and meaningful process whereby you explore who you are, what you want, and how to get there. My clients are typically smart, kind, and goal-oriented. I have found that they may be struggling with anxiety, depression, or rocky relationships but they strive for peace, inner strength, loving relationships and a sense of purpose.

When children and teens are in crisis, so are their families? Is homework time stressful? Is your child unhappy? Does he/she not have friends? Is the teacher complaining that he/she is not paying attention to the lessons? Are you concerned your child's grades need to improve in order for he/she to be promoted to the next grade level? I help children learn ways to calm themselves so they can better pay attention. Through playing games which may involve math or reading, they begin to feel a sense of success and find learning can be fun.

I work with individuals, adolescents and adults, who want or need to find their own path to inner peace and harmony without the use of alcohol or drugs, or the use of rage or isolation, or the creation of chaos as a distraction; people who wrestle with the parts of themselves that keep getting in their way. I also work with families who are confused how best to help a loved one who is abusing alcohol and other drugs.

With over 25 years of experience in the mental health field, I work with a wide range of human difficulties. From young adults trying to find their way, to individuals struggling with anxiety or depression, I believe that my work is to draw out the hidden potential in each person. Throughout the years I have trained in a wide spectrum of modalities, ranging from cognitive-behavioral therapy, to attachment theory and advanced work with the subconscious mind. And sometimes just talking about an issue in a safe environment, giving it words, allows the next step towards a happier life.

I begin the collaboration with each person seeking my professional counsel by asking, "What is it you're not getting in your life that causes you pain?" Together, we explore the resources that will allow them to heal, change and grow. During the 30 years I have practiced psychotherapy, from a systemic or holistic perspective, I have assisted individuals, parents, couples, adolescents and caregivers to see and experience their lives differently.

I am a credentialed psychotherapist and art therapist. Art making is always voluntary, not obligatory. These have been especially difficult times, often triggering depression and despair. Talking to someone can bring great relief and insight. I create a compassionate space without judgment. Using the tools of body work, mindfulness, visualization, art, and meditation we can explore together how to build a deeper connection to yourself. I believe self-love is the basis for happiness, positive relationships, and a rich meaningful life. My goal is to help you achieve a loving relationship with yourself.

Self-Harming Therapists

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behavior therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
