It is hard to say what my ideal client is because I believe that I am capable of working with various types of people and that each person is unique. Even with a "challenging" client, I have learned a lot and found value in the work. With that being said, my ideal client has a history of trauma that has impacted their ability to connect with others and themselves. They are struggling with body image, intrusive thoughts, and anxiety about how others are perceiving them. They want to be empowered to advocate for themselves when necessary and create a wellness routine that serves as a preventative measure for mental health problems.

I view counseling as a holistic and individual developmental process. Each individual that enters my office brings character and strengths as well as stressors and challenges. To me, it is important that together we build a trusting relationship that allows you to feel heard and validated. Having worked in both clinical and non-clinical settings, I have worked with a multitude of clients and have fostered a unique and special relationship with each, be-it child, adolescent or adult. Through our journey together, we will build upon the fundamentals of counseling: trust, communication, transparency and empowerment.

It is inevitable that our lives are consumed with daily challenges and obstacles. For each of us, our ability to manage those challenges differs; or, we settle and adapt much to the detriment of our emotional wellbeing and feeling as though there is no end in sight. Therapy provides an opportunity to examine those challenges and reframe them into a new, positive perspective. When we are able to see our way through and discover solutions to those problems from a position of strength, it can take on a whole new meaning.

I work with adults and adolescents struggling with Anorexia, Bulimia, Binge Eating, ARFID (Selective Eating), and the coexisting mental health struggles that go with them. Achieving recovery is absolutely possible and with over a decade of experience my core work surrounds the belief that no one should ever have to struggle with constant worry and feelings of shame.. When it feels like others just "don't get it,” change it up. When empathy comes with strength often new understanding can develop. If you're seeking an approach steeped in possibility, give me a call.

Life is a journey that can sometimes seem overwhelming with no supports. You feel stuck in patterns or behaviors, wanting new ways to meet life's difficulties. Feelings of powerlessness and vulnerability understandably lead to distress, impacting relationships you have with your partner, children, friends or coworkers. I believe we live in, and are a product of our relationships - not only with others, but with our own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It is my belief that to operate authentically in connection to those around us, we must work to strengthen the most integral relationship we hold; the one we have with ourselves.

Suicidal Ideation Therapists

How does therapy for suicidal ideation work?

Stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances can give rise to suicidal thinking. Therapy can address the events at the core of an individual’s suffering. Understanding why a person may be suicidal can help the therapist and the patient discover alternative methods of coping. A person with suicidal ideation may be mired in catastrophic thinking, and treatment like cognitive behavioral therapy is a good choice for breaking such patterns. In addition, treatment such as acceptance and commitment therapy can help a person manage their distress through better emotion regulation.

Which therapies are best for suicidal ideation?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavior, psychodynamic, acceptance and commitment therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapies are two widely used therapies that can help individuals with painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual tolerate distress, regulate emotions, and not act on dangerous urges.

Are there specific medications to be combined with therapy?

The use of medication for suicidal thoughts must be aligned with the underlying cause; conditions such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis may be at the root of suicidal ideation. A psychiatrist may prescribe medications for symptoms, which may include antipsychotics such as aripiprazole or antidepressants such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for suicidal ideation?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Patients may see improvement within 15 to 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, perhaps, a six-month period. Still other patients, especially those with co-occurring conditions like major depression and anxiety, may need to continue sessions for up to 12 to 18 months. In some cases, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm.
