I work primarily with adolescents, children, and young adults who have had very difficult experiences and need a safe, playful, and steady partner to explore the impact of these events on their lives. As an out queer clinician I also work regularly with LGBTQIA+ clients who seek a therapist aware of the complexity of those identities in the world, as well as with parents looking to better develop skills to support trans or queer-identified children. I recognize racism and white supremacy as forms of social oppression that provoke traumatic responses and work accordingly with clients who have been harmed by these systems.

Quite simply, psychotherapy is about conversations. The conversations we have with ourselves and with others. We often try so many different tactics to live happier more fulfilling lives, and we come to realize that it isn't always enough. A therapeutic conversation is based on an open and genuine collaboration between client and therapist; a relationship built on trust, honesty, and understanding. As the foundation for good therapeutic work, it's essential to feel comfortable and cared for. I hope to provide this conversation.

I work with adults looking for relief from anxiety, depression, stress, challenging life transitions, and problematic use of alcohol and other substances. Perfectionism, damaged self-esteem/self-worth, guilt, and shame are all confounding factors that commonly drive our painful emotions and self-sabotaging behaviors. Our work together can help you discover ways to effectively manage difficult emotions, expand limiting thoughts and beliefs, and find motivation for behavior change, guiding you toward a more satisfying, serene, and fulfilling life.

Therapy can provide a space for individuals to safely and openly explore past and present experiences of trauma, conflict, and desire. Addressing these experiences in therapy without the threat of judgment can help alleviate stress, anxiety, anger, and depression. The relationship that develops between the patient and therapist, in addition to the client's individual strengths, insight, and motivation, facilitates growth and progress towards the client's ultimate goals. A mutually trusting and respectful relationship between the patient and therapist is therefore a necessary and key factor in my practice.

I specialize in cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of depression and anxiety, with the goal of improving your interpersonal relationships and sense of self. I take an active, empathetic stance as a therapist. Together we will identify thought patterns and coping strategies that may no longer be working for you the way they once did, and learn new techniques to maximize your quality of life. As we learn more about how you act/react to challenges, we will investigate how these styles developed, why they developed, and why they may no longer be successful in helping you navigate the demands of your life.

Jungian Psychoanalytic Association: Jungian Analysis seeks to illuminate the set of unique factors that comprise each individual. Our symptoms, dreams, and conflicts teach us about ourselves if we can learn their language: the psyche speaks to us in a symbolic way. Psychological growth, psychologically and spiritually, involves listening to the entire psyche throughout all phases of life. While many of us begin therapy in the midst of a crisis, we come out stronger when we learn about ourselves in the course of problem solving. Our therapists accompany you with the goal in mind of helping you find your truest, most complete self.

Inevitably, we all encounter periods in our lives in which what we've learned to that point isn't sufficient for the challenges we now face. I believe therapy can be a rich environment in which to better understand ourselves and the world and to revisit what we want in life and how to get there. Whether you are dealing with significant anxiety or depression, or simply need a new environment to learn your way through new challenges with a helping eye and ear, I bring a creative, curious and open-minded approach to helping you progress through life's challenges.

Everyone has their own unique and idiosyncratic means of getting in their own way whether or not they are aware of it. Unfortunately, we are also attached to these ways of hindering ourselves. This is perhaps at the source of most experiences of suffering and can manifest in various symptoms such as anxiety, depression, anger, inhibitions and relationship or sexual issues.

People come from different walks of life, with unique challenges and unique needs. There isn’t always a “one size fits all” solution for something that can be so complex. Anderson’s style emphasizes the collaboration between client and therapist through a Person-Centered Approach, while utilizing techniques from other modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and psycho-dynamic Therapy.

Male Therapists

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
