Life can be chaotic and unpredictable with unexpected twists and turns that can leave us feeling like we’re barely hanging on. Most, if not all of us, come to a point in life where we need help from someone outside of our family and friends. Whether you are struggling with past traumas or current anxieties and stress, I am looking forward to meeting you to begin this journey of healing, restoring hope, and building resilience so you can thrive rather than just survive.

As a counselor for over 20 years, I get how overwhelming life can be. You might be wondering, "How can I go forward? Who am I now?" It might be hard to imagine you'll ever feel normal or happy again. You might wonder if it is even worth it. We'll look at your history to make sense of what happened, and how you got through it. Looking at how you've changed, and what you want now can be overwhelming. Together we can sort it out. As a cancer survivor I offer insight into navigating significant life changes, and options for growth. Figuring out who to lean on, and options to strengthen your spirituality can help with trauma, as well.

You are lying in your bed at 3:00am and you're not sure what went wrong or how things in your life got so derailed. It seems like there is no end to your worrying, stress and fear. This isn’t how you thought life would unfold for you. You can't connect the dots to how you got here, and you certainly can't envision where to go next for things to feel better. Or maybe you're part of a couple, and you don’t recognize the person lying next to you anymore, and you don’t know what happened in your relationship: you think you loved this person - you know you did love this person - but you have no idea how things got so disconnected.

I work best with individuals who feel drawn to discover their purpose in life, and value having a deep and steady awareness of self. Usually these are people who take things on themselves and may have been putting off therapy. Maybe you're burned out on trying to find the answers on your own. Or perhaps there's a particular challenge you just can't get past, such as an addiction, a toxic relationship or job, depression or fear towards the future.

Using tools informed by Eastern spirituality, Brainspotting & mindfulness-based therapy, we’ll help you regain control & create the thriving, rewarding life you deserve.
It started with small things. You were anxious about a work meeting, so you made up an excuse to get out of it. Then you canceled a dinner date – you’d been looking forward to it, but the anxiety became too severe as it neared. Over and over, you let worry dictate your choices until it’s gotten to the point where you don’t even feel in control anymore. Your anxiety makes the decisions, and you’re just along for the ride. You’ve tried making changes and developing healthier habits. Constantly blaming yourself for your shortcomings, trying to criticize your anxiety into submission. But, it’s no use. This is not the life you imagined.

Hello, my name is Amanda and I believe this career found me. Ever since I was a child all I wanted was to help people, be outside and create art. I know the power of art because it has helped me through many tough times. Art is how I communicate when I don't have the words to share my inner world with others. I know the power of being heard without judgment or unwelcome advice, because I too have experienced the feeling of isolation and frustration from receiving the opposite. I know the power of having a relationship with the natural world, because it has fostered a sense of belonging and spirituality for me.

Sometimes in life, we reach a point where we might feel lost, confused, disconnected, uncomfortable, alone, or even completely unsure how we feel. My hope in therapy is to meet you where you are at with empathy, accept you for who you are without judgment, and work towards the goals that we establish together. With these values persisting throughout therapy, I believe healing is possible for anyone. We will approach our goals in therapy from a holistic perspective, which means that we will seek to understand our challenges through a variety of lenses: our biology, psychology, sociology, culture, and spirituality.

Spirituality Therapists

What should I expect from therapy that incorporates a focus on spirituality?

Spirituality can mean different things to different individuals, depending on their experiences, beliefs, and life histories. Some individuals focus on strengthening their belief system, while others experience spirituality in secular ways, such as through meditation, yoga, or by spending time in nature. Clients can expect a therapist to help guide and grow their spirituality through any of these techniques, encouraging the individual to cope with the challenges they face and develop strategies to build resilience and purpose to improve their outlook in life.

What are the most common treatments that include spirituality?

There are several treatments that incorporate spirituality. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) helps a person examine and reframe their negative thoughts and behaviors. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) focuses on emotional acceptance and psychological flexibility. Existential therapy is most often used to address anxiety, depression, grief, loneliness, apathy, despair, questions of identity, and feelings of purposelessness and existential dread. Transpersonal therapy focuses on a client’s spirituality and meaning in life and may incorporate techniques including meditation, visualization, hypnotherapy, dream analysis, and or breathwork.

Can therapy incorporating spirituality help atheistic or agnostic individuals?

Yes. For non-believers, spirituality can offer benefits including a greater sense of connection to others and to the natural world. An interest in spirituality may also spur individuals to pursue mindfulness practices, or to contemplate their purpose in life and how to achieve it.

How effective is spirituality as a therapeutic remedy?

Research suggests spirituality is generally beneficial for individuals. It is correlated with better health habits, such as less substance use, and an improved capacity to cope with stress and other mental health challenges. Increased spirituality can lead individuals to become more empathic and less materialistic, as well.
