Are you struggling with an issue affecting your relationships? Are you interested in understanding how your past experiences shape your sense of self and interactions with others? Are you fed up with trying to manage all the obligations of a busy life, and are interested in finding new ways to approach what matters most to you? Over 25 years ago, I started working with clients to change the things that prevented them from living life the way they wanted to, in relationships, parenting and at work. Today the lessons I’ve learned continue to ring true even in an ever-changing world.

Pursuing therapy represents a desire to heal. Whether dealing with a new challenge or an old wound, my work with clients is focused on supporting the process of healing and learning to "let go" of the harmful patterns that get in the way of feeling satisfaction, peace, and fulfillment in our lives and relationships. As a therapist, I try to create a space where you can pause, reflect, and feel safe and supported in acknowledging the emotions that many of us learn to avoid, dismiss, or tuck away.

Is your life turning out the way you planned? Are your personal relationships fulfilling? Are you finding the right job for you? Do people get who you really are? Too often we lose track of the way we exist each day. Depression over past mistakes or anxiety about what might happen in the future prevent us from being who we want to be in the present. The goal of existential counseling is to help you develop a better relationship with your "self" first, and then to improve your relationships with others. To help you gain more confidence in the decisions you make daily and to worry less about how others will judge you in the future.

We all experience challenges during our everyday lives. Sometimes these challenges can seem overwhelming and discouraging. I work with people who want to make changes in their lives to help themselves overcome these difficult experiences. These changes can often be difficult to contemplate, yet alone act on. I strive to create a supportive environment for my clients where they can explore their concerns and the emotions that arise.

I offer presence and connection to support couples and individuals towards greater authenticity and fulfillment. I understand well the tremendous capacity for the psyche to accommodate unresolved trauma by intricate and patterned coping means. This tempers my approach towards one of gentle courage with clients. Together we learn to find a pacing that creates safety for making contact with what hurts. I am deeply interested in supporting the recognition of your intrinsic capacity to grow towards wholeness. This occurs through dialogue, active processing of emotions, and encountering your truth in the present.

A licensed marital and family therapist by training, I help clients focus on attaining improved relationships with significant people in their lives, including an improved attitude toward themselves.
I see individuals, couples, and families. My goal is to provide clients a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship to talk, feel, heal, and change. Life challenges present us with opportunities for new chapters, new growth. Helping you reach your therapy goals is of utmost importance to me. You do not need to be controlled by the past, yet do you often use old behaviors in situations wanting a new response? Are you suffering from depression, anxieties, relationship problems, fears, self-doubts, or "irrational" worries? Together we will explore ways to help you live with more awareness, more freely, and with more energy for your present.

Marriage Counseling Therapists

How does marriage counseling work?

Marriage counseling works by teaching couples concrete skills to communicate with one another and solve disagreements in healthy ways. A trained mental health professional works with both members of a couple to explore difficulties the couple may be having and helps them develop skills to address these matters. Couples who don’t have any difficulties but want to prepare for marriage may develop skills for the future.

How long does marriage counseling typically last?

Marriage counseling is a short-term form of therapy; the process may last between four and eight sessions. Other forms of relationship guidance from mental health professionals, such as couples therapy, are longer lasting, may focus on the past rather than just the present, and are tailored to the individual couple and their emotions, history, and patterns in the relationship. Couples therapy often lasts for 12 weeks or longer.

Is marriage counseling effective?

Marriage counseling helps many couples develop relationship skills that may not have been acquired or tested in a relationship; partners may be better able to communicate and address conflict following counseling. However, there are many different forms of marriage counseling, and this form of counseling does not have as strong an evidence base as other modalities such as couples therapy.

Is marriage counseling effective if only one partner wants to go?

Yes, marriage counseling can still be effective if one partner convinces the other to engage in the process. Of course, whether counseling is effective depends on the couple’s commitment to work on their relationship; however, the short-term, skills-based nature of marriage counseling makes it a relatively easy “ask” of a partner, and the hesitant individual may see its value once counseling begins.
