In order to recover, you need to know what you are recovering from. As a person in recovery myself, I have both personal and professional experience to help those desiring help with untreated addiction and/or unresolved trauma. My work with co-occurring disorders including mental health, substance abuse and trauma started in a hospital on the Dual Diagnosis unit then grew into working as a trauma therapist and from there, working as both a residential and IOP therapist at a treatment center for chemical dependency and eating disorders. Being in recovery gives me the insight and perspective in which to help you with your journey.

Most of my clients have both mental health and substance abuse issues.
Servicing clients is case by case and through assessments, will determine their care and the approach to take. The goal is to ensure the client is comfortable and willing to share and not feel force to share. When the space is provided the flow of the conversation is natural and the client will begin the journey to healing.

I have extensive training working with couples and those that suffer from symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, addiction, and depression.
Do you find yourself getting caught up in the past? Does it seem like you can't move forward from things that have happened or decisions you have made? Is this reoccurring theme telling you that you are not good enough or not important? Do you find yourself asking questions in your marriage like, does this person really have my back, or will this person be there for me no matter what? These are a few of the common themes that I hear over and over in my office. There is hope!

Hi, my name is Richard Ehrhardt and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Florida. I worked in a well-known substance abuse facility, Turning Point of Tampa in their residential and Intensive Outpatient programs. I also have experience in teletherapy and outpatient levels of care in private practice. Complex times in society have increased substance abuse and many are struggling to cope. Unmet needs such as uncertainty, absence of love and significance, and lack of purpose lead to depression, anxiety, guilt, shame and substance abuse. You may be searching for peace, joy, contentment and love, but don't know how to do it alone.

I also work with numerous different presenting concerns ranging from stress management and life transitions to anxiety and depression to substance use.
As with many other things in life, I am a firm believer that there is a “no one size fits all approach" in counseling. What this looks like in therapy is working collaboratively with you, using an integrative approach that is tailored to best fit your needs. I use theoretical approaches that fit with both your personality and presenting issues in counseling; primarily utilizing solution-focused and client-centered approaches, specifically focusing on strengths. It is always my hope to create a safe and comfortable space where growth can flourish.

Although I’ve climbed mountains in Hawaii with breathtaking views, nothing is more beautiful than seeing God’s work in someone’s story. I am honored to witness healing and changed lives daily as a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. I have worked with clients who have struggled with addiction, self-blame, faith, anxiety, depression, and the hurt of a partner’s infidelity. My approach to counseling begins with understanding my client’s beliefs and life experiences. We then collaborate to create personalized goals and solutions. I admire your bravery in reaching out for help and prioritizing your own overall wellbeing.

Most of us have goals. Sometimes it may feel like “just getting by”, but most of us yearn for something a little more than where we currently stand. And we want to feel better especially in the quiet moments. It may look like climbing out of the pit of addiction, finally putting boundaries on unhealthy relationships or getting personal struggles under control. As a military career veteran, I feel that I can offer a unique perspective and approach to problem solving and goal setting. My experiences have cultivated an insight into human behavior, both in the quiet times and in the height of intensity that few therapist can replicate.

Addiction Therapists

What is the best therapy for addiction?

Addiction treatment will be tailored to the individual. People seeking help for addiction—whether with a psychotherapist, in an outpatient clinic, or in a residential program—should expect to engage in multiple types of treatments, sometimes including medication. For anyone recovering from addiction, avoiding situations in which one has typically used a substance is essential, as is the support of close connections. Since substance use disorders tend to co-occur with underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression, those must also be addressed as part of any recovery plan.

How long does therapy for addiction take?

There is no set timeline for recovery from addiction. Patients and their families should expect the work to last several months, if not longer. Residential treatment programs may be based on a stay of 30, 60, or 90 days, with continuing work after release, but only about 1 percent of people are treated in such facilities. Ceasing use is just the first step; therapy to help maintain abstinence and effect behavior change must follow. The process of recovery, neuroscience has shown, involves brain cells recovering the capacity to respond to natural sources of reward and restore control over the impulse to use. Another definition of recovery is restoring voluntary control over one’s substance use and retaking all of one’s previous responsibilities.

How effective is drug addiction treatment?

Substance use disorders are treatable and remission is achievable for many who seek recovery; by some estimates, more than three-quarters of people who become addicted to alcohol or drugs recover. But that success rarely occurs quickly or on a set timeline; relapse is not only common, but many therapists and clinicians view it as a normal part of the process—not always a sign that a person has returned to addiction, but a signal that their treatment should be adjusted to help them regain control. Overall, research suggests, five years after the end of substance use, one’s risk of relapse is no greater than that of others who had not faced addiction. Other experts believe that complete abstinence is not the only measure of recovery, and that, through effective treatment, many people can learn to control their use.

How can you get addiction treatment for someone?

The most important factor in recovery from addiction is widely understood to be an individual’s commitment to change. For that reason,“interventions” in which friends and family gather to urge or force someone to begin immediate treatment often backfire; even when such efforts do lead someone to begin treatment, they may be less likely to stay than those who are self-driven. Still, family members can play an important role in supporting an individual who seeks help and can take part in family therapy as one element of a loved one’s treatment.
