I've been privileged to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups, in outpatient, inpatient, school, and agency settings, and also in private practice for 20+ years.
If you feel down, stuck, or don't know how to move forward, it can help to find professional support—someone in your corner, to help you get your bearings again and find your way through the tough times. As a solution-focused and strengths-based therapist, I work with clients to understand their past, clarify their present, and support their goals moving forward, even through life’s hardest situations. I work with clients experiencing the effects of trauma using EMDR and mindfulness, targeting and reworking core beliefs to move individuals and couples forward in their relationships with themselves and others.

I view psychotherapy as a powerful tool for breaking out of confusion and pain. I work with people seeking help with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, performance, life transitions, job problems, relationship issues, loneliness, and unhappiness. I actively and compassionately work with individuals (adults and adolescents) to help them regain a sense of hope, meaning, and connection in their lives, improving their coping skills and to manage daily stress and overcome destructive behaviors. As a therapist, I work with people to create the lives they want, allowing them to interact more successfully in their families, relationships, and the broader community.

There are many benefits of counseling. Counseling helps us figure things out; it can help us achieve our goals, and it can help us mend or improve important relationships in our lives. It can help us find reasons to live and new ways to love ourselves, and it can help us learn to cope with what life has handed us or to grieve what has been taken from us. And overall, counseling can offer reassurance that things are going to be ok. There are a number of reasons people just like you come to counseling; struggling in a relationship, family conflict, help establishing boundaries, processing past trauma, or having problems at work.

Life is constantly changing, but not everyone adjusts to it in the same way. This unpredictability can lead to feelings of overwhelm, unpreparedness, powerlessness and insecurity. Sometimes, it's challenging to manage our own response to change or let alone the reactions of those close to us. What worked for others may not work for us, but that doesn't mean we should give up on our potential.

Couples Counseling Therapists

Does couples counseling work?

Research shows that couples counseling is effective; it can reduce relationship distress and improve emotional awareness, communication, empathy, intimacy, and overall relationship satisfaction. For example, emotionally focused therapy was found to be effective for about 75 percent of couples, and those benefits lasted at least two years.

When should a couple seek counseling?

Couples can benefit from counseling if they consistently struggle in their relationship. They may have lost the ability to communicate effectively, become entrenched in harmful patterns, begun to fight more than usual, broken the other’s trust, suffered from a mental or physical illness, or faced any number of other challenges. Many therapists offer free consultations, so if a couple isn’t sure whether therapy is necessary, asking directly can provide clarity.

How can I get my partner to go to couples therapy?

The decision to seek couples therapy is often driven by one partner, who then convinces the other to participate. When discussing the idea, the initiator should be direct and assertive. They can state the problems they see and explain how the relationship would benefit from therapy. In more serious cases, they can also explain how their relationship may suffer without making any changes or seeking professional help.

How does a couple prepare for couples counseling?

The anticipation of beginning couples counseling can be difficult—sometimes more difficult than the first session itself. Taking a few moments to reflect can allay those concerns: What are the current challenges? When and how did they begin? What do they want the relationship to look like in the future? Reflecting on these questions can help individuals or couples articulate their goals. Of course, the therapist will also ask questions and guide couples through the process.
