As a Licensed Marriage and Family therapist, with over 20 years experience in the Mental Health field, I use Brain Spotting, Behavioral Therapies , and Mindfulness therapeutic modalities to compassionately collaborate with individuals to address internal barriers and learn communication skills to interrupt unhelpful relational patterns.
Your relationship with yourself is the most important relationship you will have. Experiencing intense emotions, fearfulness or being easily triggered can get in the way of having meaningful relationships with yourself and others. Fear, reactivity, anxiety, panic, unhealthy communication patterns, worry and sadness, can be a result of negative experiences or trauma which can create challenges to living the life you want. Therapy can help to improve your quality of life by uncovering underlying issues, strengthening relational skills and learning strategies to cope with triggers.

Welcome! I work at Horizon Counseling Center as an Associate Marriage Family Therapist under the supervision of Ashley Barnes-Brown CA12766. In my practice, I employ Brainspotting, a trauma-informed therapeutic approach, to help unearth and explore thoughts, emotions, and sensations that may have been unintentionally suppressed or concealed. I also integrate Internal Family Systems therapy, which emphasizes the presence of various aspects within ourselves. According to this framework, there are no inherently "negative" parts, and the therapeutic objective is to assist these parts in discovering their more balanced functions.

I am a first responder family and mom with lived experience in the unique aspects of first responders, postpartum struggles, loss, parenting, and trauma (including birth trauma).
If you are searching for a trauma and EMDR trained therapist who is culturally competent in working with first responders, military, chronic illness, within pregnancy, perinatal and postpartum periods (including birth trauma) or someone who comes alongside parents and helping professionals; you are in the right place. Moving through difficult experiences and complex emotions can be uncomfortable, which is why I operate with respect, kindness, and understanding. I also have a compassionate, yet straight-forward approach that sprinkles in insight; allowing you to move into the growth you are seeking and gain skills for your future.

Do you have a hard time putting yourself first? Do you find yourself walking on eggshells in your relationships? Are you a worrier? Do those worries and negative thoughts interfere constantly with your daily life? You may feel like your brain never stops, even waking up in the middle of the night with a million thoughts in your head. You might find yourself replaying situations from yesterday or from 10 years ago obsessing about what went wrong. You often get stuck in a never-ending loop of anxiety and guilt. It’s exhausting, frustrating, and overwhelming!

Most of us have goals we want to accomplish. Sometimes, we lose sight of these goals and seek a compass with which to guide ourselves. I strongly believe my task is to provide a safe place for you to do the work to achieve your goals. I've also become passionate about working with clients as they move from one stage of life to another. I believe a key to happiness is mindful connection to self, others, spirituality, the community, and the world. I provide feedback.

This wasn't how it was supposed to go. You're worried you will feel this way forever, that you will never feel like yourself again. Maybe you’re reading this because your parenting experience is not what you expected it to be, in fact, it’s probably been pretty awful so far. Perhaps you’ve experienced child, infant, or pregnancy loss and there are really no words to describe the void you feel right now. The loss is inexpressible and you feel so alone. Or you’re struggling to cope with chronic illness, grief, or life stressors. You feel like you’re hiking through a forest without a map... you just want to find a path forward.

Over the last two and half decades my clientele has changed along with my experience, skill acquisition and personal life. I have been fortunate to have a career that reflects my own life including peek moments, many blessings, lessons, long trials and struggles. Big losses have rounded the edges of once sharp ideals and brought a humble compassion and gratitude for the souls I've met in my office. While I have a solid grasp of several powerful treatment modalities, my goal first is to be a good human to those who seek me out and to utilize my whole self and experience in moving people through their lives.

Being a part of the military can add a complicated layer to life and especially to family life. Not only does the military bring its own culture and obligations, it also brings its own "family" component that can get "tangled" when interwoven. Often times service members and partners find themselves struggling to balance family life with work and military life and when life is out of balance a multitude of issues can arise such as depression and anxiety, not to mention coping with any added stress such as combat experiences or other trauma within or out of the military.

Family Therapy

What do family therapists do?

A family therapist facilitates the process of understanding and improving how a family functions. The therapist will help family members develop empathy for one another. They’ll seek to understand existing patterns, misunderstandings, and conflicts that arise, in order to help the family arrive at a realistic, unified understanding and develop the coping skills they need to build stronger relationships.

How long does therapy for families take to work?

Therapy manifests differently in every family; a common time frame is 12 weekly sessions, but some families may see improvement after just a few weeks. Families should discuss their goals with the therapist at the beginning of the process and periodically revisit those goals to assess their progress together.

How can you encourage a family member to attend family therapy?

You can encourage family members to attend therapy by expressing with both love and concern the challenges you see and explaining how a therapist could help the family navigate those challenges together. An outside perspective can help everyone feel heard, get on the same page, and develop new skills. If family members are still hesitant, it may be helpful to emphasize that family therapy is short-term—it won’t last forever.

Is therapy for families effective?

Family therapy can significantly improve family dynamics and relationships. Research suggests that family therapy can help individuals understand their role in the family, communicate and solve problems together, reduce conflict and draw boundaries when necessary, and develop coping skills for stressors, major life changes, and mental or physical illnesses within the family.
